Description
Kohina Hiruko is a ten-year-old girl who appears in the anime Black Bullet as a secondary antagonist. She is an Initiator, a type of Cursed Child infected with the Gastrea virus that grants superhuman physical abilities, and she serves as the daughter and partner of Kagetane Hiruko. Kohina has short blue hair and red eyes, and she wears a small ornate dress that incorporates a back-mounted sheath for her dual short swords. Her origin is tied to Kagetane’s experiments: he kidnapped women and used in vitro fertilization along with the Gastrea virus to produce offspring, and Kohina was the sole survivor among five sisters after being forced to fight one another to the death. This brutal upbringing shaped her into a ruthless and efficient combatant who treats killing as a casual act. Kohina’s personality mirrors her father’s cruelty, and she shows no hesitation in eliminating anyone who opposes her. She is intensely loyal to Kagetane, following his orders without question and sharing his chaotic worldview. Despite this, she occasionally displays moments of inner conflict, such as hesitating when asked whether she should kill Rentaro Satomi or Enju Aihara, which hints at a buried moral awareness. When her plans are thwarted or when someone she intends to kill is saved, she loses her composure and angrily berates her opponents. A more vulnerable side emerges after Kagetane’s defeat, when she breaks down in tears at Rentaro’s apparent death. In the story, Kohina acts as Kagetane’s primary enforcer, engaging Rentaro and Enju in direct combat. Her role emphasizes the dark potential of Cursed Children and serves as a foil to Enju, highlighting how different environments can shape similar beings. Her abilities are rooted in her Gastrea infection, which grants her enhanced speed, strength, and reflexes. She is especially deadly in close-quarters combat, wielding her twin kodachi with precision and speed sufficient to deflect bullets and match Enju’s powerful kicks. She claims to be invincible in melee range, and her lack of hesitation makes her a formidable threat. Her relationship with Kagetane is the driving force of her actions; she admires his strength and philosophy, and their synchronized fighting style makes them an efficient pair. Her relationship with Rentaro and Enju is defined by opposition, but her brief emotional reactions toward them suggest a complexity that goes beyond simple antagonism. Throughout the series, Kohina’s development is limited, but the glimpses of hesitation and sorrow she shows indicate a character shaped by trauma rather than pure malice.
