Description
Makoto Hanamiya is a second-year student at Kirisaki Daiichi High School, where he serves as both the captain and the coach of the boys' basketball team. He plays the point guard position and is recognized as one of the Uncrowned Kings, a group of elite players from the same generation as the Generation of Miracles but considered slightly below them in overall ability. Hanamiya is known by the nickname the Bad Boy due to his deliberately foul and underhanded style of play. He has short black hair, yellow eyes, and stands 179 centimeters tall, weighing 67 kilograms. His birthday is January 12.

Hanamiya's personality is marked by a sadistic and manipulative nature. He openly admits that he enjoys watching other people suffer and takes pleasure in crushing the hopes and dreams of hard-working players. He does not particularly care about winning for its own sake; instead, he uses dirty tactics to foul opponents out of games, sometimes even causing injuries that force players to stop basketball for extended periods. He is responsible for injuring Teppei Kiyoshi's knee the year before the main events of the story. Hanamiya views talented players as nothing more than valuable targets to break, believing that once a genius or prodigy is broken, they become worthless garbage. He dislikes it when things do not go according to his plan, and he can become visibly enraged when his predictions are wrong. Despite his hypocritical attitude toward his own tactics, he does not deny using them.

Hanamiya possesses a high level of intelligence, with an IQ reported to be over 160. His primary basketball ability is analyzing opponents' passing patterns. By narrowing down possible passing lanes, often with the help of his teammate Kentaro Seto, he can intercept passes with near perfect accuracy. He claims he can steal every ball, and he has even stolen passes from players who possess enhanced perception, such as Shun Izuki's Eagle Eye. Hanamiya developed a defensive strategy known as the spider's web, in which Seto and others coordinate to restrict passing options, allowing Hanamiya to swoop in for steals. He also excels at general basketball fundamentals such as passing, shooting, and speed. His teammates follow his orders without question, and he has a strong influence over them, making them execute his underhanded plans as instructed.

In the story, Hanamiya serves as a primary antagonist for the Seirin High team during the Winter Cup preliminaries. His first appearance occurs in chapter 84 of the manga and episode 29 of the anime. He directly targets Kiyoshi, whose previous injury haunts Seirin, and later taunts Tetsuya Kuroko about his motives. When Kuroko asks why Hanamiya uses such methods, Hanamiya replies that he simply enjoys causing suffering. He considers it fun to ruin others' dreams. Hanamiya's relationship with Kiyoshi is defined by the past injury, and he shows no remorse, even saying rest in peace when giving the signal for further attacks on Kiyoshi. During the match against Seirin, Hanamiya's spider web initially dismantles Seirin's offense, but Kuroko and his teammates eventually find a way to counter it, leading to Kirisaki Daiichi's defeat. Hanamiya's enraged reaction to his plan failing reveals his intolerance for losing control.

Hanamiya lives with only his mother, and little else is disclosed about his family background. He does not undergo significant personal development over the course of the series, remaining a calculating and cruel figure whose role is to challenge the protagonists through psychological and physical intimidation. His notable abilities include his analytical mind, his theft-based defense, and his capacity to orchestrate complex foul plays that can remove key players from the game.
