OVA
Description
Julius Kingsley is a Britannian military advisor deployed to St. Petersburg to take charge of operational planning for Euro Britannia's war effort against the European Union. The character appears in the OVA series Code Geass: Akito the Exiled, which takes place in the time gap between the first and second seasons of the main Code Geass storyline. Julius Kingsley is in reality Lelouch vi Britannia, who has been subjected to Emperor Charles zi Britannia's Geass, causing him to forget his previous life as the rebel Zero and believe himself to be a loyal soldier of Britannia.

Physically, Julius Kingsley has a striking resemblance to Lelouch vi Britannia. He wears an elaborate eyepatch over his left eye, which conceals his active Geass. The eyepatch features two purple crystals hanging from its ends and one directly underneath his left eye.

In terms of personality, Julius Kingsley possesses a large amount of self-confidence bordering on arrogance, which he channels through grandiose and flamboyant gestures. He displays a much crueler demeanor than Lelouch even pretended to be, making him an even more effective tactician. His pride is amplified to an arrogantly intense degree, and he shows extreme loyalty to Emperor Charles, though this loyalty is a complete inversion of Lelouch's true feelings toward his father. The brainwashed state is somewhat unstable, with Lelouch's original personality occasionally resurfacing, as indicated by Kingsley muttering Nunnally's name or experiencing episodes where his memories break through the conditioning.

Julius Kingsley serves his role under the direct authority of Emperor Charles, operating on the eastern front of the Euro Britannia campaign. Upon arriving in St. Petersburg, he proudly declares that the Emperor has placed him in charge of all eastern front operational planning for Euro Britannia's military. He assembles the nobles and knights of Euro Britannia and launches a massive attack on the E.U. under the plan known as the Ark Fleet. This attack involves a large-scale airship bombing of strategic positions, but the bombing serves primarily as a cover to spread panic and disorder. The true operation is a massive cyber attack that hacks European systems and disables power, forcing E.U. military forces on the frontlines to withdraw. Taking advantage of the chaos, Kingsley orders a massive counterattack on all fronts. When military leaders express horror at the civilian losses the plan would cause, he dismisses these concerns and orders the objectors placed under custody.

Julius Kingsley has several significant relationships. He is escorted by Suzaku Kururugi during his travel to Europe on the Imperial Family's private transcontinental train. This relationship is tense and strained, reflecting the fractured friendship between Lelouch and Suzaku following the events of the first season. When first introduced, Kingsley is seen clutching his right eye while begging for water, but Suzaku merely watches him suffer without assisting. Despite this tension, Suzaku serves as his protector and enforces obedience to Kingsley's commands among the Euro Britannian military. Julius also interacts with Shin Hyuga Shaing, the Grand Master of the Order of Saint Michael, in a game of chess. Julius defeats Shin easily and taunts him for his weakness in refusing to sacrifice his queen, representing his attachments to loved ones. However, during this confrontation, Kingsley begins proclaiming his loyalty solely to the Emperor and then suffers a psychotic episode, sweeping chess pieces from the table and muttering about past memories. His eyepatch falls off, revealing his active Geass with its characteristic red ring, indicating he remains under someone else's control.

The character arc of Julius Kingsley is marked by instability and the gradual resurfacing of Lelouch's true self. Throughout the OVA series, there are multiple scenes suggesting his mental state is fragile, with his original personality briefly breaking through the brainwashing. He mutters Nunnally's name, recalling his sister, and experiences fragments of his true memories during moments of stress. The brainwashing is eventually discovered by Shin Hyuga Shaing, who recognizes that the tactician is actually Zero. This revelation leads to a confrontation in which Suzaku attempts to eliminate Shin to protect the secret, but both Suzaku and Lelouch are ultimately captured and imprisoned together. While imprisoned, Lelouch regresses into memories of the summer when he and Suzaku lived together at the Kururugi Shrine prior to the war. Later, members of the Geass Order including Rolo arrive and inform them that the Emperor requests an audience with Julius Kingsley, foreshadowing Lelouch's fate at the beginning of Code Geass R2, where his memory is rewritten again and he is sent back to Ashford Academy as bait to lure C.C..

In terms of abilities, Julius Kingsley demonstrates exceptional tactical and strategic brilliance, which is the core reason Emperor Charles deployed him to the European front. He devises complex operations involving psychological warfare, cyber attacks, and conventional military maneuvers simultaneously. His Ark Fleet plan successfully spreads panic through European society, forces military withdrawals, and enables a massive counterattack, all while civilian casualties are dismissed as acceptable costs. He is also a skilled chess player, easily defeating Shin Hyuga Shaing. His Geass remains active and visible in his eye throughout his appearances, which represents a contradiction to the state shown in R2 where Lelouch's Geass was invisible and inaccessible because he had no memory of possessing it. This may indicate that his resistance to the Kingsley persona was stronger than his resistance to the Lamperouge persona that followed.
