TV-Series
Description
Ikuya Asano is a character who appears only in the anime adaptation of The Twelve Kingdoms, as he does not exist in the original novel series where the protagonist attends an all-girls school.
Asano is a high school classmate and childhood friend of Youko Nakajima, and he is also the boyfriend of their mutual friend Yuka Sugimoto. He is a teenage boy with black hair cut to ear-length and black eyes, typically seen in his school uniform. When a mysterious man appears in their classroom and a monstrous crow attacks, Asano is transported alongside Youko and Sugimoto to the Kingdom of Kou, a strange and unfamiliar world.
Initially, Asano presents an energetic demeanor, but beneath this surface lies a deep-seated apathy. He is generally a decent person, though his sense of masculinity is somewhat fragile, particularly when compared to his stronger-willed girlfriend. As the three displaced students wander the new land seeking a way home, tensions rise. Sugimoto grows to resent Youko and becomes easy to manipulate, while Asano finds himself caught in the middle. When Sugimoto finally turns against Youko, Asano is torn in his loyalty, and during a battle between the two girls, he falls from a cliff and disappears, believed dead.
However, Asano survives the fall. He eventually finds his way into a group of traveling performers known as shusei, using his knowledge of mathematics to work as their accountant as they journey through the kingdoms. The prolonged isolation and inability to understand the language of this alien world take a severe toll on his sanity. In a shop that sells items washed up from the Sea of Void, he discovers a rusty antique revolver with bullets in its chamber and restores it to working order. He comes to believe that the world of the Twelve Kingdoms is a kind of game that will only end when he has killed everyone in it.
His mental state is briefly stabilized when he meets and travels with another Japanese girl named Suzu and her companion, but they are eventually separated. As his sanity continues to erode, Asano becomes consumed by the question of why he was brought to this place. Unable to find a reason for his life to go on, he comes to view the entire world as twisted and evil, which makes him vulnerable to the influence of the corrupt provincial governor Shoukou.
When Asano finally reunites with Youko, she tells him about her own harrowing adventures and explains that she has decided to stay and fight for the Kingdom of Kei. Seeing this as his last chance at redemption, Asano accepts her offer to work for her and the resistance. Despite his fragile state, he volunteers for a mission to deliver a message and bring aid to a besieged city. During this task, he is confronted by enemy soldiers and fatally stabbed. He dies in the arms of Princess Shoukei. At his side, Youko realizes that she had already seen a vision of this death reflected in the blade of a magical sword, but had mistaken the expression of peace on his face for contentment in life. Youko places his revolver on his grave, a weapon that ultimately played no significant role in the events of the story.
