Description
Masami Iwasawa is the original leader, lead guitarist, and vocalist of the band Girls Dead Monster, often shortened to GirlDeMo, within the afterlife school. She is also responsible for writing the lyrics and composing the music for the band's songs. Iwasawa has chin-length pink-red hair with two longer locks framing her face, and red eyes. She typically wears the boys' school uniform with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, paired with black calf-high boots and black sweatbands on her wrists.
On the surface, Iwasawa possesses a calm, mature, and quiet demeanor, which has led Yuri Nakamura to describe her as a cool beauty. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a deeply passionate individual. Her primary focus is music, and when she is composing a song, she can become completely absorbed, ignoring the rest of the world around her. While she often appears serious, she can also be somewhat absent-minded and has shown a more comical and innocent side, particularly in her interactions with her bandmate Hisako. Iwasawa has a deep-seated discomfort with interacting with others, a result of being gossiped about during her life, and she initially hid her true feelings behind a facade. This began to change when she met people like Yuri and Hisako, who showed her genuine sincerity and kindness.
Iwasawa's tragic past is the driving force behind her intense passion for music. Born into a poor, turbulent family with parents who constantly fought, she had no room of her own and would curl up and cover her ears to block out the noise. One day, while escaping the turmoil at home, she listened to a song by a band called Sad Machine. The music resonated deeply with her, as she learned the singer had a similar life, and she fell in love with music, seeing it as a path away from her problems. Inspired, she picked up an abandoned guitar on a rainy afternoon and began performing on the streets. She worked hard, holding down jobs like washing dishes in a restaurant and going to auditions, building her dream of a career in music. However, just as she was on the verge of escaping her dysfunctional family, she collapsed at work due to a severe cerebral stroke. The stroke was a result of head trauma she had suffered years earlier when her father, in a fit of rage, hit her with a beer bottle as she tried to stop one of his fights with her mother. She spent the remainder of her life paralyzed in a hospital bed, unable to move or speak, until she eventually died.
In the afterlife, Iwasawa discovered she was able to sing and play guitar again. She and Hisako formed a band, which eventually became Girls Dead Monster. Their concerts serve as a vital diversion for the Afterlife Battlefront, drawing the attention of the NPC students and the student council president, Angel, while the rest of the SSS carries out their operations. Iwasawa's personal anchor in this world is her fledgling music career, which was cut short in her previous life. Her character arc resolves when, during a performance of her song My Song, she comes to terms with her past. As she pours her feelings into the music, she accepts her life for what it was, and having found a way to express herself and be heard, she achieves a sense of peace and disappears. Her disappearance serves as a pivotal moment, being the first such event in the series that foreshadows the true nature of the afterlife and what it takes for a soul to move on.
Her most significant relationships are with her fellow band members. Hisako, her co-founder and friend, is someone who understands her passion for music, though their friendship has had its share of conflicts, particularly when Iwasawa's focus on music caused her to neglect their relationship. Yuri Nakamura holds her in high regard, relying on the band as a critical part of her battle strategies while also giving Iwasawa the freedom to pursue her musical creations. Her most notable ability is her musical talent. She is not only a skilled guitarist and powerful vocalist but also a gifted songwriter whose compositions speak directly to her thoughts and feelings, allowing her to fascinate listeners and, ultimately, come to terms with her own existence.
