Maya Misaki is a supporting character in the anime The SoulTaker. She is introduced as a mysterious young woman who becomes a friend and savior to the protagonist, Kyosuke Date, early in his journey. Maya possesses psychic abilities and appears to have knowledge of the SoulTaker phenomenon as well as the organizations that are pursuing Kyosuke. Her role in the story quickly takes a dark turn when she is captured by the Kirihara Corporation, a powerful conglomerate that conducts experiments on individuals with special abilities. The Kirihara Corporation uses Maya as a test subject in their search for Kyosuke's twin sister, Runa Tokisaka. Following extensive experimentation, Maya dies as a result of the procedures. Her corpse is later reanimated and fused with another entity to become a combined form known as Soul Anubis, which is then deployed as a weapon against Kyosuke. Throughout the series, Maya's relationship with Kyosuke is defined by her initial act of helping him and the subsequent tragedy of her manipulation and death at the hands of the corporation. Her development is limited due to her early removal from the active story, but her transformation into an antagonist serves to demonstrate the ruthless methods of the Kirihara Corporation and the emotional weight it places on Kyosuke. Maya's notable ability is her psychic power, which, combined with her posthumous mutation, makes her a formidable opponent in her altered state.
