TV-Series
Description
Meia Gisborn is the stoic and highly skilled leader of the Dread Team, the elite fighting unit aboard the pirate ship Nirvana. She is a young woman of nineteen years with blue hair and blue eyes, standing 169 centimeters tall. Her demeanor is one of a serious and dedicated professional, often appearing cold or unapproachable to those who do not know her. This exterior, however, masks a deeply traumatic past that has shaped her into the strong, independent leader she becomes.
Her background is marked by profound loss and abandonment. As a young girl on the planet Mejere, her family was torn apart when her Ohma, the term for a woman-father, abandoned her and her Fama mother following a public scandal. Shortly after, a catastrophic system failure in their living quadrant forced a mass evacuation. In the ensuing chaos, Meia’s mother sacrificed herself to push her daughter onto the last escape ship, leaving Meia to witness an explosion that consumed her mother and the others left behind. Orphaned and burdened by the stigma of her Ohma’s failure, she became a problem child, living on the streets and engaging in gang fights, slowly losing her will to live.
This despairing path ended when she met Magno Vivan, the captain of the Nirvana, who offered her a laser ring and a chance to die doing something worthwhile rather than in obscurity. Accepting this offer gave Meia a new purpose, and her natural talent and sharp mind allowed her to rise quickly through the ranks to become the squadron commander. In this role, she is usually referred to as Leader or Chief by her peers, who hold her in high regard despite her strict nature. She shoulders the heavy responsibility of her team's safety, often devising tactics and even using her own Dread as a decoy to protect less experienced pilots like Dita.
Initially, Meia embodies the prejudiced views of her society, which is segregated by gender. She openly detests men and is disgusted when she finds herself in need of rescue or assistance from Hibiki Tokai, the male protagonist. This hatred slowly fades as she begins to respect Hibiki for his indomitable spirit and fierce determination to prove his existence. Captain Magno herself notes that, of all the women on the ship, Meia most resembles Hibiki in temperament and personality. Their bond deepens into a strong mutual respect, and although she never openly admits to romantic feelings, Hibiki becomes the only male she does not outright despise.
Her personal journey is one of healing and learning to express her true feelings. The warm and chaotic atmosphere of the Nirvana, along with her responsibilities and key relationships, slowly softens her cold heart. She learns to come to terms with the abandonment by her Ohma and the death of her mother, eventually placing a repaired family photo inside her treasured jewelry box. She suffers from claustrophobia, a secret known only to a few, which is a lingering psychological scar from the suffocating terror of the evacuation. Despite her discomfort with emotional displays—to the point of flying off on a solo scouting mission to avoid a surprise birthday party—the crew sees through her tough exterior and appreciates her as an unflappable and caring leader.
As a pilot, Meia commands the silver Dread, the fastest unit in the Nirvana’s arsenal. Her combat style relies on this immense speed and precise maneuvering. As one of the three pilots whose Dreads were exposed to the mysterious Paexis light, her machine can merge with Hibiki’s Vanguard to form a powerful Vandread known as the White Wing. In this form, which resembles a silver eagle, its primary and most devastating attack is a near-unstoppable high-velocity ram that can pierce through almost any enemy unit. This Vandread, representing pure speed, is the ultimate expression of her combat philosophy and her role as the sharp, swift edge of the Nirvana's fighting force.
