Description
Alone is the central antagonist of the 18th century Holy War, serving as the chosen mortal vessel for the god Hades. He is introduced as a gentle and compassionate 15-year-old orphan living in Italy alongside his sister Sasha and his best friend, Tenma. With a deep-seated belief in the inherent goodness of all people and a profound disapproval of violence, Alone aspires to be a painter, a dream that represents his desire to create beauty and preserve the peaceful world he cherishes.
His fate is sealed when the gods Hypnos and Thanatos, servants of Hades, identify him as the human with the purest soul of the era, making him the ideal host for their master's reincarnation. The initial transformation is triggered by Pandora, who kisses him and seals the soul of Hades within his body. At first, Alone resists this dark destiny, but a horrifying discovery breaks his will. He realizes that everything he paints begins to die, a morbid manifestation of the divine power growing inside him. Consumed by grief and manipulated by Hypnos, Alone undergoes a radical ideological shift, coming to believe that death is not an end, but the ultimate form of salvation—a release from the suffering of pain, war, and poverty. Convinced that he is a savior, he accepts his role as Hades and sets out to "liberate" the world.
As the main antagonist, his role is to lead the forces of the Underworld against the Sanctuary of Athena. His central project is the creation of the Lost Canvas, a colossal painting of the Earth as seen from space. Once this painting is completed, it will bring death to the entire world, fulfilling his twisted vision of universal salvation. He is not a mere puppet of Hades; in a striking subversion, Alone confesses that he was never fully possessed and that the genocidal plan is his own, using the god's immense power as a tool to achieve his goal. However, traces of his former self remain, most notably in his lingering, complex affection for Tenma. He desperately wants his friend to join him in his new world and later, as his human conscience resurfaces, begs Tenma to kill him to stop the coming calamity.
His key relationships define his tragedy. Sasha is his younger sister, who is revealed to be the reincarnation of Athena, making him her sworn enemy. Tenma is his best friend, who becomes the Pegasus Saint, the warrior fated to fight against Hades. Their promise—that Tenma would become a strong saint while Alone would perfect his art—is a poignant reminder of the peaceful life lost to the Holy War. Pandora acts as his overseer, initially devoted to serving the Hades within him, while the twin gods Hypnos and Thanatos are the master manipulators who orchestrated his fall to ensure Hades's complete resurrection.
Throughout the story, Alone’s development is a tragic arc of descent and partial redemption. He transforms from a pure-hearted artist into a cold, nihilistic god who commits atrocities, including destroying his own village and killing his friends. This evolution is visually represented by the shift in his appearance: his kind blue eyes become distant, and his hair turns from blonde to black as he fully embraces his power. In the final battle, Tenma and Sasha manage to reach the last remnant of his humanity. He briefly regains his former self and begs for death to prevent Hades from taking complete control. When Tenma hesitates, the god's will overwhelms him, and Hades fully manifests. Ultimately, after the god is expelled from his body through a combined effort, Alone's life comes to an end, a victim of the divine machinations that corrupted his pure heart.
As Hades's vessel, Alone possesses terrifying abilities. He can drain the life force from any living creature simply by painting it, a power that becomes the foundation of his plan. He wields the full cosmic power of the god of the Underworld, including the creation of the reality-altering Lost Canvas, and is capable of single-handedly defeating several Gold Saints and banishing powerful beings to other dimensions. His powers blur the line between art and reality, making his paintings instruments of mass destruction.
