Description
May Chang, also known as Mei Chang, is the seventeenth princess of the eastern nation of Xing, born to the Xingese Emperor and a concubine from the low-ranking Chang clan. Her background is defined by the poor social standing of her family, which drives her central mission: to discover the secret to immortality and present it to the Emperor in order to elevate the Chang clan's position within Xing's imperial hierarchy. Accompanied only by her beloved miniature panda, Xiao Mei, she travels alone across the dangerous desert into the country of Amestris in search of knowledge about the Philosopher's Stone.
In terms of personality, May is a spirited and imaginative young girl with a strong sense of duty. She is kind-hearted and genuinely caring toward others, often treating even strangers with warmth and respect. Her imagination is both a strength and a weakness: it allows her to think creatively and devise novel solutions, but it also causes her to daydream and lose focus at critical moments. She has a quick temper and can become emotional easily, yet she consistently demonstrates remarkable bravery and resilience, rarely showing fear even in life-threatening situations. Beneath her cheerful exterior lies a determined and intelligent mind, capable of sustained focus when her goals or loved ones are at stake.
May's motivation is deeply rooted in family loyalty. Unlike other Xingese travelers who seek immortality for personal ambition, her journey originates from a desire to heal her ailing father and secure a better future for her impoverished clan. This personal, compassionate drive sets her apart and remains her primary focus throughout the story, even as she becomes entangled in the larger conflict unfolding in Amestris.
In the story, May first encounters the Elric brothers with a confrontational attitude, having idolized Edward Elric from afar as a heroic figure. Upon meeting him in person, however, she is quickly disillusioned by his short stature and short temper, leading to immediate friction. She subsequently transfers her affections to Alphonse Elric, imagining him as a gallant knight in shining armor. She develops genuine feelings for Alphonse and becomes deeply protective of him. She also forms a significant bond with Scar, the Ishbalan warrior priest. Despite his violent history, May is the first person to treat Scar as an ordinary human being rather than an enemy, and the two develop a near-familial relationship. She travels with him and works alongside him to decode his brother's notes, demonstrating her high intelligence and analytical ability. Her relationship with Lan Fan and Ling Yao, her half-brother from a rival clan, begins with hostility due to their competing family interests but eventually evolves into mutual respect and cooperation.
May undergoes meaningful character development over the course of the series. She begins as a naive girl with a romanticized view of the world, but her experiences in Amestris force her to confront harsh realities. She learns to set aside her personal fantasies when necessary, to trust and cooperate with former adversaries, and to contribute selflessly to a cause larger than her own. Her participation in the final battle against Father and the homunculi marks a turning point, as she steps beyond her original goal of healing her father to fight alongside her allies against a universal threat. After the conflict, she returns to Xing, and two years later, Alphonse travels to Xing to learn alkahestry from her. The final family portrait suggests that they eventually build a life together in Amestris.
May's notable abilities are rooted in alkahestry, the Xingese tradition of alchemy that emphasizes the manipulation of life energy and the natural flow of the earth, in contrast to the more mechanical equivalent exchange practiced in Amestris. She is a prodigy in this field, highly skilled in both healing and combat applications. She uses specially designed throwing knives to create transmutation circles at a distance, allowing her to perform alchemical feats from range with remarkable accuracy. She is also an accomplished martial artist, capable of extraordinary agility, acrobatics, and powerful kicks, enabling her to defeat multiple strong opponents at once. As a practitioner of Xingese martial arts, she can sense the chi or life energy of other beings, including both humans and homunculi, which allows her to track targets, discern intentions, and assess the capabilities of her foes. Her most significant intellectual achievement is the development of reverse-alchemy or reverse-transmutation techniques, methods for undoing alchemical effects rather than creating them. This innovation, born from her need to reverse her father's alchemically influenced illness, proves crucial in the final confrontation with Father, providing a capability that no Amestrian alchemist possessed. Her intelligence overall is on par with the Elric brothers; she is quick-witted, creative, and was the only person able to decode Scar's brother's complex research notes, a task that stumped even the brilliant Dr. Marcoh.
