Description
Machi Komacine is a central member of the Phantom Troupe, designated as member number three. She originates from Meteor City, a discarded wasteland whose inhabitants are considered nonexistent by the outside world. Machi was one of the children who, along with Chrollo Lucilfer and others, formed the group that would later become the infamous Spider. Her background in Meteor City instilled in her a fierce loyalty to the Troupe, which she views as family. Physically, she is a petite young woman with blue eyes and pink hair that she usually wears tied up. She often dresses in traditional Japanese-style clothing, giving her the appearance of a modern kunoichi.
Machi possesses a cold and stoic personality, rarely displaying emotion. She is calm under pressure and speaks with a blunt, sarcastic edge. Her loyalty to Chrollo is absolute; she has stated that she would hunt down and kill Hisoka if he ever harmed the Troupe's leader. Despite her detached demeanor, she cares deeply for her comrades and has sharp intuitions that are trusted by other members. She often serves as a voice of reason within the group and is highly analytical, capable of correctly deducing the mechanics of an opponent's Nen ability after brief observation.
Her motivations are tied entirely to the well-being of the Phantom Troupe. She seeks to protect its members, especially Chrollo, and carries out the group's missions without hesitation. She does not display personal ambition outside of the Troupe's collective goals.
In the story, Machi first appears during the Heaven's Arena arc, where she meets with Hisoka after his battle with Kastro. She plays a significant role in the Yorknew City arc, where she participates in the Troupe's operations against the Nostrade family and Kurapika. During this arc, she uses her Nen threads to heal and reattach Hisoka's severed arm, showcasing her medical utility. Later, during the Greed Island arc, Machi enters the game alongside other Troupe members after Shalnark discovers that Greed Island is a real island and that an exorcist capable of removing Kurapika's Nen from Chrollo is present there. Her role on the island is to support the Troupe's mission to locate that exorcist, though the arc focuses more on Gon and Killua's journey. Machi reappears in later arcs, continuing to serve as a loyal Spider.
Her key relationships include her deep bond with Chrollo, whom she respects and protects above all others. She shares a tense and complex dynamic with Hisoka; while she works with him when necessary, she distrusts him and views him as a potential threat. She is also close to other founding members such as Nobunaga and Pakunoda, and her intuition is often relied upon by her teammates.
In terms of development, Machi remains relatively static as a character. She does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, but her unwavering loyalty and her analytical sharpness are consistently highlighted. Her role as a healer and tactician within the Troupe solidifies her importance.
Machi's notable abilities stem from her Nen type, Transmutation. She creates thin, durable threads from her aura that can be extended to great lengths. These threads have multiple applications. They can be used to sew wounds and reattach severed limbs with remarkable speed and precision, restoring full function almost instantly. They are also formidable in combat: she can use them to strangle, cut, or restrain opponents, as well as to control enemies like puppets. The threads are extremely strong when short, but their tensile strength decreases as they are lengthened. When separated from her fingers, the threads lose their Nen enhancement and become ordinary, weak strands. Her combat style relies on setting traps and using her threads creatively. She is also highly proficient in Ren and Ten, and her physical strength ranks sixth among the Troupe. Her sharp battle intuition and analytical mind are considered as valuable as her Nen ability, allowing her to assess opponents and strategies quickly.
