Description
Lyra is a young alchemist who appears exclusively in the 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist. She is first introduced as the highest-ranking subordinate of Lieutenant Yoki in the mining town of Youswell. Ambitious but initially misguided, she aspires to become a State Alchemist and serve her country with unwavering loyalty. Her primary alchemical technique involves a necklace bearing a small transmutation circle, which she uses to condense moisture from the air into a liquid state and then vaporize it, launching a high-velocity shock wave that can destroy buildings.
Lyra’s personality is characterized by a strong sense of duty and obedience, which at first manifests as blind devotion to her superior, Yoki. She carries out his orders without question, even when those orders harm innocent people. After being defeated in battle by Edward Elric, she begins to reevaluate her choices. Edward’s words and actions, particularly his willingness to protect the townspeople and outsmart Yoki rather than rely on brute force, inspire a change in her perspective. She recognizes that her previous loyalty was misplaced and decides to improve herself.
Three years later, Lyra becomes the apprentice of Dante, an ancient alchemist who appears as an elderly woman. During this time, Lyra strives to strengthen her abilities and to emulate Edward’s example of using alchemy to help others rather than blindly serving authority. When the Elric brothers encounter her at Dante’s mansion, she apologizes sincerely for her past behavior and expresses admiration for their resolve. Edward notes that she has undergone a complete turnaround.
Lyra’s development, however, is cut short. Dante, whose body is aging, uses the Philosopher’s Stone to perform a body switch with Lyra and then kills her to keep the secret hidden. For the remainder of the series, Lyra’s physical appearance becomes the vessel for the main antagonist, Dante. Edward later discovers the remains of Dante’s original body and mistakenly believes the homunculus Greed is responsible.
A parallel version of Lyra appears in the film Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa, serving tea to Edward and Fritz Lang in a brief cameo. In that alternate setting, she seems dismissive of Edward, reflecting her initial impression of him.
Lyra’s notable ability lies in her air-pressure alchemy, which grants her powerful offensive and destructive capability. Her attack method resembles a force known as inertial cavitation. She has no known combat skills outside of alchemy, and her tool of focus is her transmutation necklace.
Key relationships in her story include her initial servitude under Yoki, her admiration for and eventual emulation of Edward Elric, and her tragic apprenticeship under Dante, who ultimately betrays and kills her. Through her brief arc, Lyra evolves from an obedient enforcer to a repentant and self-aware individual, though her potential is never realized due to her untimely death.
