Description
Lenalee Lee is one of the main characters of D.Gray-man, a series set in a fictional 19th century where she serves as an exorcist for the Black Order, an organization dedicated to destroying demonic beings called Akuma created by the Millennium Earl. She is the younger sister of Komui Lee, the Chief Officer of the Black Order, and formerly served as the Assistant Branch Chief of the European Branch. Lenalee was originally a member of Marian Unit before transferring to Nine Unit under General Klaud Nine.
Lenalee's background is deeply tragic. At a very young age, her parents were killed by an Akuma. Because she was identified as an Accommodator capable of wielding a sacred weapon called Innocence, she was forcibly taken from her only remaining family member, her brother Komui, and brought to the Black Order headquarters against her will. For three years she was never allowed to leave, and the place felt like a prison. She attempted to escape repeatedly and was restrained, even attempting suicide, which led to her being tied to her bed. Her suffering only ended when Komui joined the Black Order as a scientist to be with her. With his support and the friendships she formed, she stopped trying to escape and began to see the Black Order and her fellow exorcists as her home and family. She now fights to protect them, knowing she has a place to return to. Her perception of the world is defined by her close attachments; whenever a friend dies, it feels to her as if a part of her world has been destroyed.
Lenalee is characterized by a warm, kind, and compassionate nature, often prioritizing the well-being of her friends above her own. She exhibits a strong sense of duty and loyalty that stems from her past. Although she can be emotionally vulnerable and deeply affected by loss, she possesses fierce determination and unshakable resolve when her loved ones are in danger. She has a playful side as well, which adds depth to her personality. Her core motivation is to protect her friends and family, whom she considers her entire world.
Lenalee's role in the story is that of a prominent frontline exorcist and emotional anchor for the group. She often acts as a source of emotional strength and compassion within the Black Order. She is introduced when she shows newcomer Allen Walker around the Black Order headquarters, and she accompanies him and others on several missions, including the search for General Cross Marian. One of the most significant turning points in her role comes when she believes Allen has been killed and later defeats a Level 3 Akuma on her own, pushing her Innocence beyond safe limits. This leads to the Millennium Earl suspecting her of possessing the Great Heart, a central object in the war between the exorcists and the Noah family. After the attack on the Black Order headquarters by a Level 4 Akuma, she willingly reconnects with her Innocence, leading to its evolution into a Crystal-type, a never-before-seen form that fuses with her blood.
Her key relationships include her brother Komui Lee, who is deeply protective of her and serves as her most important emotional support. She shares a close bond with Allen Walker, showing concern for his well-being and drawing emotional strength from him. With Kanda Yuu, there is a mutual respect that leads to a complicated but supportive friendship, as Kanda shows rare moments of kindness and protectiveness toward her. She also has a playful friendship with Lavi, who often teases her but also offers comfort during difficult times.
Throughout the series, Lenalee undergoes significant development. She starts as a traumatized child forced into a role she hated, but she grows into a strong and determined warrior who willingly embraces her duty to protect others. Her Innocence evolves in tandem with her emotional growth, culminating in her attaining a Crystal-type Innocence that demonstrates her deep conviction to fight for her loved ones. This development marks a transformation from a reluctant exorcist to one who actively chooses to fight and protect.
Lenalee's notable abilities center around her Innocence, known as the Dark Boots. This is an Equipment-type anti-Akuma weapon that takes the form of a pair of boots, greatly enhancing her speed, strength, and agility, particularly in her legs. In its initial form, the Dark Boots allow her to jump great heights, run at high speeds, create whirlwinds with the technique Waltz Mist Wind, and use sound waves as footholds with the technique Sound Shackles. She can also walk on water with the technique Water Shackles. After her Innocence evolves into a Crystal-type, it becomes parasitic, fusing with her blood and forming cross-shaped scars on her ankles when not in use. When activated, it manifests as thigh-high stiletto boots that can repair themselves as long as she has blood in her body. This form grants her even greater speed and power, including the technique Iron Shackles, which focuses her power into a shell of twisting blades for a devastating attack. She is noted to have above-average physical abilities even without her Innocence, is bilingual in English and Chinese, and possesses strong administrative skills from her time as Assistant Branch Chief.
