Description
Cancer Deathmask is the Gold Saint who serves as the guardian of the fourth temple of the Sanctuary, the Temple of Cancer, which is also known as the Temple of the Giant Crab. His training ground was Sicily, Italy, and he was born on June 24, making him 23 years old. He is a tall individual with an athletic build, blue eyes, and blue hair. Deathmask became a Gold Saint at the unusually young age of ten, like several of his peers. His true name is unknown, as Deathmask is a title derived from his practice of collecting the faces of his victims.
Deathmask possesses a severe, ruthless, and overwhelmingly cruel personality. He is one of the most vicious and malevolent among all the Gold Saints. His defining characteristic is his twisted philosophy regarding justice and power; he firmly believes that justice is not a real concept, but simply a name given to the will of the stronger. According to his view, those with power can force their will on the weak and call it fair. He is deeply sadistic and appears to derive pleasure from killing, yet he frames these actions within his personal vision of justice rather than as mere personal gratification. He is immensely proud and arrogant, never retreating or giving up in a fight, maintaining a superior posture against all opponents based on the power he holds.
Deathmask serves those he deems powerful without question. He is one of the few Saints who knows the truth that the Pope is an impostor, the Gemini Gold Saint Saga, yet he chooses to obey his orders because he respects Saga's absolute power and believes it can bring order to the Sanctuary. His temple is horrifically decorated with the literal faces of his fallen victims, which include not only warriors but also innocent men, women, and even children. He regards these tortured faces as trophies and the marks of his power, showing no remorse for their suffering and using the logic of unavoidable collateral damage to justify his actions.
In the story, Deathmask is first dispatched to the Five Old Peaks of Rozan in China to kill the elderly Libra Saint Dohko for disobeying the Sanctuary's orders. There, he easily overpowers the Bronze Saint Dragon Shiryu but is forced to retreat when the Aries Gold Saint Mu intervenes, as Deathmask did not wish to fight two Gold Saints at once. During the battle of the Twelve Temples, Shiryu remains behind at the Temple of Cancer to face Deathmask alone, allowing Pegasus Seiya to advance. Using his signature technique, the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, he sends Shiryu's soul to the entrance of the underworld, Yomotsu Hirasaka. Overconfident and arrogant, Deathmask follows to ensure his victory. In a fit of annoyance at the prayers of Shiryu's friend Shunrei, he uses his telekinesis from across the world to try and kill her. This act of pure evil, combined with his complete disregard for justice, causes his own Cancer Gold Cloth to reject him as an unworthy master, removing itself from his body. Without the protection of his Cloth, he is defeated by Shiryu, who awakens the Seventh Sense, and is thrown into the pit of Yomotsu Hirasaka to his apparent death.
Deathmask is later resurrected by the god Hades to serve as a Specter, tasked with killing Athena. Along with Pisces Aphrodite, he attacks Aries Mu and Seiya, but he is easily defeated and banished once more. However, it is later revealed that his betrayal was a ruse orchestrated by the former Pope, Aries Shion. Deathmask was secretly loyal to Athena, feigning service to Hades to infiltrate the underworld and help awaken Athena's divine Cloth. In his final act, he appears with the other eleven Gold Saints, transcending life and death, to sacrifice themselves and destroy the Wailing Wall, allowing the Bronze Saints to reach Elysion and defeat Hades.
His primary and most notable ability is the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, a spiritual technique that separates the soul from the opponent's body and banishes it to Yomotsu Hirasaka, the entrance to the world of the dead. While the soul is trapped there, the physical body remains alive but completely incapacitated. Deathmask himself can freely travel between the living world and Yomotsu Hirasaka without suffering any consequences. As a Gold Saint, he has also mastered the Seventh Sense, allowing him to move at the speed of light. Furthermore, he possesses extremely powerful psychic abilities, particularly telekinesis, which he can use over vast distances to move objects or even levitate himself.
