Description
Quent Yaiden is a middle-aged former sheriff from the small town of Kyrios, where he once lived a settled life as a family man with his wife and young son. That life ended when he returned home to find his house burning and his family dead, with wolves present amid the flames. Believing the wolves had destroyed his home and killed his family, Quent fired on them and afterward devoted himself entirely to hunting wolves, a mission that defined the rest of his life. In truth, the destruction of Kyrios was carried out by the soldiers of Lady Jaguara in an attempt to flush out wolves, and the actual killer of Quent's family was Darcia, who acted in his wolf form. Quent does not learn this until near the end of the story. Darcia later also claims that Quent was himself a wolf who had taken human form and forgotten his origins, leaving him unable to transform back.
Personality-wise, Quent is rough, short-tempered, stubborn, and prone to yelling when angered. He carries a deep and abiding hatred for wolves that is matched only by his constant desire for alcohol, and he drinks almost continuously. The drinking serves two purposes: it dulls the pain of his loss, and it allows him to perceive the illusion that lets wolves appear human, which normally hides them from ordinary people. Despite his harsh exterior, he still shows a kind and fatherly side toward Blue, the dog that once belonged to his son and that his son had found as a pup in the woods.
