Description
Blue is a striking figure, distinguished by her dark blue-black fur and her unique status as a wolfdog, a hybrid of wolf and domestic dog. This duality is the core of her identity and the central conflict of her character arc. She is initially introduced as the loyal hunting companion and aide to Quent Yaiden, a man driven by a consuming hatred for wolves. Together, they travel the desolate landscape, with Blue using her sharp senses to track down wolves, whom both she and Quent blame for the destruction of her home and the death of her family in the village of Kyrios. At this stage, Blue lives entirely as a pet dog, completely unaware of the wolf blood that flows through her veins, and her personality reflects this devoted, obedient nature. She is calm, level-headed, and appears fairly laid-back, often resting, but she is fiercely protective of Quent and follows his commands without hesitation, even to her own detriment.
Her entire existence is upended upon encountering Cheza, the Lunar Flower. This meeting awakens her latent wolf heritage, and she is suddenly able to take on a human form. This transformation is a profound shock, forcing her to confront the reality that she has been hunting her own kind. Unable to continue this path, she makes the difficult decision to leave Quent and join the pack of wolves led by Kiba on their journey to find Paradise. Her motivations shift from serving one man's vendetta to a more personal and introspective quest. Having lived with humans her whole life, Blue, much like the young wolf Toboe, retains a deep-seated affection and capacity for bonding with them, which complicates her relationships with wolves who are more wary of humanity.
Blue's role in the story becomes that of a bridge between two worlds: the human world she was raised in and the wolf world she is discovering within herself. She is a calm and independent presence within the pack, often acting as a grounding force. Initially, some pack members, like Tsume and Kiba, are bitter and distrustful of her because of her past as a wolf hunter, but she eventually earns their trust through her actions. Her most significant relationship develops with Hige, another wolf in the pack. What begins as a mutual annoyance slowly blossoms into a deep and devoted love. Blue grows especially close to Hige, and she promises to follow him no matter what happens, even if Paradise itself would reject her for being a half-breed. This relationship provides her with a new sense of belonging and purpose, and her loyalty to Hige becomes her primary motivation in the latter part of the series.
Throughout the narrative, Blue undergoes a significant transformation. She evolves from a passive, obedient hunting dog into an independent, autonomous wolf who makes her own choices. She sheds her collar, a symbol of her servitude, and fights with ferocity for the pack she has chosen as her family. Her development is not just about accepting her wolf side, but also about reconciling it with her past. She continues to care for Quent, her "old man," and their relationship remains complex, marked by separation and a lingering bond that neither can fully sever. In the final conflict, Blue meets her end while courageously protecting Hige and Cheza from the noble Lord Darcia III. It is a selfless act of love and sacrifice, cementing her as a heroic figure. After the Earth's regeneration, she is the only wolf character not explicitly shown reborn, leaving her ultimate fate ambiguous.
As a half-wolf, Blue possesses abilities common to wolves in this world, though perhaps refined by her unique heritage. She has superhuman physical characteristics, including enhanced speed, strength, and agility, allowing her to perform feats far beyond a normal animal or human. Like all wolves, she can create an illusion of a human form; her human guise is a young woman with dark skin, long dark hair, and striking light blue eyes. She has exceptional senses, including a powerful sense of smell and hearing, which she used in her past as a tracker. Her hybrid nature may contribute to her calm and level-headed demeanor, which often gives her a strategic advantage in tense situations. She is an expert combatant, using her sharp teeth and claws effectively in battle, and her fierce protectiveness makes her a formidable opponent when those she loves are threatened.
