Description
Kenji Harima is the male protagonist of his story, a character whose outward appearance as a fearsome delinquent sharply contrasts with a surprisingly pure-hearted and devoted interior. Standing at 180 centimeters tall with a December 1st birthday, Harima is a high school student notorious for his violent reputation and fighting prowess. Despite never having formal training in any martial art, his extensive experience in street fights has made him a formidable combatant, capable of matching opponents who hold black belts. This rough exterior, often accentuated by sunglasses and a bandana, initially causes most of his classmates to give him a wide berth, but the reality of his personality is far more complex.

Underneath his intimidating facade, Harima is driven by a singular and all-consuming motivation: his love for a classmate named Tenma Tsukamoto. This affection began when he rescued her from an attacker, an act that left him with a large scar across his torso. After this incident, he deliberately adopted his intimidating look, complete with a goatee and sunglasses, hoping that when they met again as classmates, Tenma would not recognize him and be frightened. His feelings for Tenma are remarkably pure, persistent, and selfless; he remains devoted to her even though he knows her heart belongs to another student. Harima’s primary goal is to confess his love to her, yet his every attempt is plagued by a seemingly endless string of interruptions, misunderstandings, and his own crippling shyness, which contrasts sharply with his bold delinquent image.

As the story progresses, Harima discovers a new direction in life as a mangaka, or manga artist. He begins drawing as a way to channel his frustrated emotions, creating stories where a character resembling himself always wins the heart of a Tenma-like heroine. This secret hobby becomes a serious ambition, and he adopts the pen name Harima Hario. His work eventually impresses a professional editor, prompting him to seek help. This leads to a crucial partnership with Yakumo Tsukamoto, Tenma’s younger sister, who becomes his trusted assistant and editor. She is the only person he allows to see his work, making her his sole confidant in this endeavor, which inadvertently causes others to mistakenly believe they are dating.

Harima’s role in the story is centered on navigating this complex web of unrequited love and misunderstandings. His key relationships define his journey. His rivalry with Oji Karasuma, the object of Tenma’s affection, is a constant source of jealousy and comic frustration. In a great irony, Harima deeply admires the work of a mangaka named Jo Nijo, unaware that this is Karasuma’s secret pen name. His relationship with the wealthy and proud Eri Sawachika is also significant; she develops a complicated attraction to him, often teasing him and calling him Hige, but he remains oblivious to her feelings, assuming she simply dislikes him. Meanwhile, his professional partnership with Yakumo deepens, creating a quiet emotional connection as she becomes his most loyal supporter.

Harima possesses several notable abilities beyond his fighting skills. One of his more unusual talents is the ability to understand and communicate with animals, a skill he uses to keep his collection of exotic pets—which he has named after European monarchs—and even to do street-side fortune-telling. He is also an exceptional athlete and skilled motorcycle rider. Throughout the series, his appearance undergoes several dramatic changes, including a shaved head and a clean-shaven face, often as a direct result of his interactions with Eri or his attempts to impress Tenma. His character shows steady development from a simple delinquent to a young man with a dream and a deep, if often unspoken, capacity for putting the happiness of others, especially Tenma, before his own.
