Description
Legato Bluesummers is a central antagonist in the anime Trigun, serving as the second-in-command to Millions Knives and the de facto leader of the Gung-Ho Guns. He is a modified human. His primary goal is to make Vash the Stampede experience eternal pain and suffering, acting as Knives' devoted instrument in this mission. Legato is a highly effective enforcer, orchestrating complex schemes and commanding a group of eleven superpowered assassins to torment Vash throughout the series.

Legato's background is tragic and brutal. In the manga, he was a sex slave from a young age, and he developed his unique technique in secret to protect himself, planning to use it to destroy the town that held him. He was discovered before he could act, but Knives inadvertently rescued him by annihilating the settlement. Legato, having no name and nowhere else to go, offered his absolute loyalty to Knives, even allowing himself to be killed as a gesture of complete submission. Knives, impressed by his will and terrified by his ability to briefly control even him, spared Legato and gave him his new name. This origin is largely omitted from the 1998 anime, where his past is never explored, and he simply appears as Knives' already loyal servant.

Legato's personality is defined by a calm, polite, and aloof exterior that conceals a deeply sadistic and nihilistic nature. He is utterly devoted to Knives, viewing him as a godlike figure, and shares his contempt for humanity. He regards humans, including himself, as trash to be exterminated. He is a "straw nihilist," preoccupied with the idea that life is inherently painful. He exudes an aura of total control and seems to derive a twisted satisfaction from manipulating others into turning against each other, finding a perverse form of poetic justice in forcing his victims to destroy themselves. Despite his cruelty, he remains eerily composed and rarely raises his voice, given to deadpan sarcasm and passive-aggression. His self-loathing is a central driver of his actions, as he seeks to prove his worthiness to Knives by breaking Vash's spirit.

Legato's motivations are rooted in his absolute devotion to Knives and his deep-seated self-hatred. He believes that righteousness is a convenient lie and that human morality is worthless. His mission is not merely to kill Vash, but to make him suffer eternally, to break his pacifist ideals and force him to confront the pain and futility of his compassion. In causing Vash's suffering, Legato finds purpose and validation for his own existence. His obsession with Vash reflects his own internal conflict, as defeating Vash becomes synonymous with overcoming his own inner demons and proving his humanity is worthless.

Legato's primary ability is telekinetic or psychic control over the bodies of others, allowing him to manipulate their movements and actions against their will. This power stems from the fact that Vash's left arm was grafted onto his body after Knives shot it off. Because Vash is a humanoid plant, the graft imbued Legato with some of a plant's abilities. He can force individuals to harm themselves or each other, and he can also activate Vash's Angel Arm, a devastating cannon-like weapon, remotely. In the manga, his technique is more mechanical: he uses thousands of ultra-thin metal threads connected to his medulla oblongata, which he can project from a skull-shaped dispenser on his arm. These threads transmit electrical signals to control a victim's muscles, allowing him to puppet entire towns. He can also use the threads to create barriers or enhance his own physical capabilities. In the Trigun Stampede series, his powers are updated to include the use of invisible, ultra-dense threads and the ability to weaponize high-frequency vibrations, essentially turning his metal apparatus into a resonance chamber that can shred matter at a molecular level.

Legato's most significant relationship is with Knives Millions, whom he serves with religious fervor. He is Knives' most trusted ally and the executor of his plans. His relationship with Vash the Stampede is that of a torturer and a victim; he is obsessed with Vash and derives immense satisfaction from causing his suffering. Legato's obsession reveals his own existential struggle, as defeating Vash becomes a way for him to overcome his own inner demons. He also commands the Gung-Ho Guns, but his relationship with them is that of a boss or handler, with Midvalley the Hornfreak serving as a kind of personal assistant. He views the insurance girls, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, primarily as tools to manipulate Vash, using them as hostages to force him into impossible choices.

The character undergoes minimal personal development in the traditional sense; instead, his role is to be the catalyst for change in Vash. Legato's manipulations force Vash into increasingly stark moral dilemmas, culminating in the episode or chapter where he threatens Meryl and Milly, forcing Vash to choose between saving them and breaking his own no-killing rule. This confrontation is the climax of Legato's arc and a pivotal moment for Vash. In the 1998 anime, Legato is ultimately killed by Vash, who deliberately shoots him to save the girls. He dies smiling, knowing he has succeeded in breaking Vash's spirit. In the manga, he is defeated in combat by an automatic defensive "wings" ability that Vash cannot control, and later dies by a bullet to the head after threatening to kill all of Vash's allies when Vash refuses to execute him. Legato's arc is defined not by his own growth, but by his unwavering devotion to his goal and his ultimate success in becoming the first person Vash ever willfully killed.
