Description
Millions Knives is the main antagonist of the Trigun series and the older twin brother of Vash the Stampede. He is one of the few fully sentient beings known as Plants, a species that were created to generate energy and resources for humanity. Knives and Vash were born on a colony ship as part of the Project SEEDS fleet, and were raised primarily by a human crew member named Rem Saverem. From an early age, Knives was more analytical and reserved than Vash. While he initially appeared normal, he gradually became distant and began questioning his place among humans. He suffered verbal and physical abuse from a crew member, which contributed to his growing resentment. After discovering classified records detailing the brutal experiments performed on another independent Plant named Tesla, Knives concluded that humans were inherently cruel and parasitic. He believed that the only way to protect his kind was to eradicate humanity. Knives sabotaged the fleet’s navigation, causing the ships to crash onto the desert planet later called No Man’s Land, killing most of the sleeping colonists. Rem sacrificed herself to save the twins, but Knives felt no remorse and instead expressed homicidal glee.

Knives is characterized by a cold, calculating, and antisocial demeanor. He views emotion as a weakness and prefers logic, though he can become intensely emotional when it comes to Vash. He is utterly convinced of his own righteousness, seeing humanity as a disease that must be excised to create a peaceful world for Plants. Unlike a typical megalomaniac, he does not claim to be a god; he simply believes himself to be a superior being. His ultimate goal is to create an Eden-like paradise on the planet, populated only by Plants and accompanied by his brother. He is willing to commit mass murder without hesitation and shows no remorse, often revelling in the destruction he causes. However, his hatred is not blind; it is built on a cold, rational conclusion drawn from observing humanity’s exploitation of Plants. In the manga and newer adaptations, he is also shown to care deeply for other Plants, mourning their deaths and apologizing for his impulsive actions that sacrificed them.

Knives’ role in the story is that of the primary antagonist. He drives the central conflict by opposing Vash’s philosophy of peace and compassion. For most of the original 1998 anime, he appears only in flashbacks and the final episodes, having spent decades regenerating after a catastrophic confrontation with Vash in the city of July. In that battle, Vash was forced to use his Angel Arm, destroying the city and losing his own arm, while Knives was severely wounded from the waist down. He was placed in a stasis tube to regenerate, during which his subordinate Legato Bluesummers commanded the Gung-Ho Guns to hunt Vash. Upon recovery, Knives directly confronts Vash again, and is eventually shot multiple times and carried away by Vash, presumably to be rehabilitated. In the manga and the 2023 anime Trigun Stampede, his role is more prominent and his backstory is explored in greater depth.

Knives’ key relationship is with his twin brother Vash. The two were once inseparable, but their philosophical divide tore them apart. Knives loves Vash in a possessive, obsessive way and constantly tries to convince or force him to abandon his humanistic ideals. He exploits Vash’s guilt and frames him for his own crimes, hoping that humanity’s rejection will drive Vash back to him. Despite their conflicts, Knives never truly wants to kill Vash; he wants to save him from what he sees as delusion. His relationship with Rem is complicated: he cared for her but eventually came to see her as naive and her sacrifice as proof that humans would always betray them. He holds Legato Bluesummers in a position of reverence, treating him as a loyal servant rather than an equal. He also forms a cult called the Eye of Michael in Stampede, with Dr. William Conrad as his high priest.

Knives undergoes significant development across different versions. In the original anime, he begins as a normal child who gradually turns sociopathic after trauma. In the manga, he is more apathetic toward humans but deeply caring toward other Plants, and in the later stages he begins absorbing other Plants into himself to increase his power, realizing that using his abilities is slowly killing him. In Trigun Stampede, he is portrayed with more persuasive motivation and a clearer character arc, moving from a hurt child to a determined genocidal figure who still holds a sliver of hope that Vash will join him. His final fate varies: in the anime he is captured and possibly rehabilitated; in the manga he undergoes a change of attitude after fusing with many Plants and launching an Ark to leave humanity without resources, eventually reaching a point where he seems to reconsider his path.

Notable abilities shared with Vash include those of an independent Plant: advanced physiology, extended lifespan, the ability to summon wings and fly, regeneration, and the power to generate energy blades from his hands and feet. Knives possesses a unique ability to control other Plants, and in Stampede he can manipulate Vash’s perception and memories by seizing control of his Gate. He can generate matter from the Plant plane, produce sharp metal projectiles, and in the manga he fuses with thousands of Plants to become exponentially more powerful, creating a floating Ark. He does not require food, water, or sleep, drawing energy directly from the Core. His signature weapon is a black-and-red version of Vash’s revolver, though he relies more on his innate powers.
