Description
Alexander Anderson is a central figure in the Vatican's secret war against the supernatural, serving as a priest and the deadliest operative of the Iscariot Organization, Section XIII of the Vatican. He is best understood as the arch-rival and dark mirror of Alucard, the vampire servant of the Protestant Hellsing Organization. Anderson is a man defined by a terrifying paradox: a gentle caretaker of orphans and a fanatical crusader who revels in the slaughter of heretics and monsters.

Physically, Anderson is a tall, broad-shouldered man with a heavy-set jaw, short blond or grey hair, and constant stubble. A large, wedge-shaped scar is permanently carved into his left cheek. He is most often seen in a large grey cassock, black shirt, grey trousers, and black boots, but his most distinctive features are his round glasses, a silver cross around his neck, and a pair of white gloves. On the back of these gloves are black inscriptions: on the right, "Jesus Christ is in Heaven," and on the left, "Speak with the Dead". This inscription hints at his role as an intermediary between the living and the unholy dead.

Anderson's personality is a study in contrasts. When not in combat, he is a calm, collected, and even kind-hearted individual. He runs an orphanage outside Vatican City and is shown to be genuinely affectionate and caring towards the children in his charge. However, when engaged in his holy mission, this gentle facade evaporates, replaced by a merciless, almost bestial fury. He becomes an obsessive crusader who compulsively quotes passages from the Holy Bible as he fights, his words and actions indicating a fanatical, fundamentalist obedience to what he perceives as the word of God. He displays an immense hatred for Protestants, whom he views as heretics, and initially refers to Sir Integra Hellsing as "Babylon," a reference to the Whore of Babylon. He believes violence is only justified when directed against monsters and non-believers and expresses satisfaction that a large vampire population in England would presumably kill many English Protestants.

Anderson's motivations are rooted in an absolute, unwavering faith. He sees his mission as a holy crusade to purge the world of all monsters and enemies of the Catholic Church, by any means necessary. He believes he is the sword of God, his judgment made flesh. This mission is personal and ideological, driven by a conviction that he is purifying the world. He resents the control of England over Northern Ireland, which he believes to be rightful Catholic territory, and states that it is his mission to kill unbelievers. This religious and political zealotry defines his early actions.

In the story of Hellsing Ultimate, Anderson serves as a major antagonist and a constant foil to Alucard. He is introduced as the Vatican's ultimate weapon against the undead, a "trump card" powerful enough to rival Alucard himself. He first clashes with Alucard and his fledgling, Seras Victoria, in Ireland, where he effortlessly incapacitates Seras and engages the vampire lord in a brutal fight. His role becomes more complex as the series progresses. During the Nazi Millennium invasion of London, Anderson and his Iscariot forces are sent to assist, but he quickly becomes a rogue element. He disobeys direct orders from his superior, Enrico Maxwell, to capture or kill Integra, instead choosing to escort her to safety out of a newfound respect for her courage and conviction. He eventually turns against Maxwell, shattering the barrier protecting him and allowing Alucard's familiars to kill the power-mad priest for his crimes against innocent civilians. This act demonstrates that despite his fanaticism, Anderson has a clear moral boundary he will not cross: the slaughter of the innocent.

Key relationships define Anderson's journey. His most significant relationship is with his nemesis, Alucard. Despite being mortal enemies, a deep, grudging respect grows between them. Alucard recognizes Anderson's power and will, comparing him to the human heroes who defeated him as Dracula, such as Abraham Van Helsing. Alucard states that he would be proud to be killed by a man like Anderson. For his part, Anderson seems to relish the challenge Alucard presents, calling him "the black peril" and laughing in anticipation of their battles. He also has a complex relationship with Enrico Maxwell, a man he raised from childhood in his orphanage. Anderson tries to guide Maxwell, but ultimately judges him unworthy and allows him to die for his hubris and sins. His relationship with Integra evolves from pure hatred to a genuine, if begrudging, respect, as he sees her as a worthy leader with an unbreakable spirit.

Anderson undergoes a significant, tragic development. He begins as a seemingly one-dimensional, psychotic killer, but is gradually revealed to be a more complex figure with a strong moral code and a capacity for kindness. His final evolution, however, is his downfall. Driven by his obsession to destroy Alucard, he uses a powerful relic called the Nail of Helena, said to be one of the nails used in the crucifixion of Christ. He drives the nail into his own heart, sacrificing his humanity to become what Alucard calls a "monster of God". This transforms him into a massive, inhuman mass of thorny vines, granting him immense holy power at the cost of his soul. Alucard is disgusted by this choice, declaring that Anderson, now a monster himself, is no longer worthy of killing him. In their final battle, Alucard rips out Anderson's heart, killing him. In his dying moments, a calmed Anderson hears the voices of children and makes a final peace with his grieving rival, telling him that monsters do not cry.

Anderson's notable abilities make him one of the most formidable fighters in the series. He is a "Regenerator," a human whose body has been enhanced, possibly through biotechnology or a "divine gift," to possess superhuman regenerative capabilities, allowing him to recover from bullet wounds to the head and even regrow limbs, though this regeneration has limits. He possesses superhuman strength, speed, reflexes, and durability, allowing him to slice through steel, dodge bullets, and trade blows with the nigh-invincible Alucard. His signature weapons are a seemingly endless number of blessed silver bayonets, which he wields with masterful skill as both melee weapons and thrown projectiles. These bayonets are highly effective against vampires and other unholy creatures. He also utilizes pages of scripture, which can be used to create holy barriers to trap enemies, purify an area, or even for teleportation. In his final form, empowered by the Nail of Helena, he gains monstrous plant-like powers, generating holy thorns and flames, and his regenerative abilities become nearly absolute until his heart is destroyed.
