Description
Amon is the head hunter of the STN-J, the Japanese branch of the secret organization Solomon, holding the rank of S-Class Hunter. At 25 years old, he is a composed, enigmatic, and deeply serious individual who approaches his duty with a quiet and unwavering focus. His personality is marked by stoicism and mystery; he speaks only when necessary and rarely displays emotion, which can make him appear cold or detached. He is the most experienced member of his team, and his colleagues look to him for leadership and guidance, a pressure that discourages him from showing personal attachments.
Amon's motivations are profoundly shaped by his personal history. He is a Seed, a person with dormant witch traits, born of a witch mother and a human father. His childhood was marked by a traumatic event when his mother’s powers awakened, causing her to lose her memory and no longer recognize him. This incident instilled in him a deep-seated fear and hatred of witches, fueling his dedication to hunting them. Despite his own hybrid heritage, he is committed to his role, believing that witches must be hunted.
Within the story, Amon is initially assigned as the partner and guardian for the protagonist, Robin Sena, who is a Craft user sent to join the STN-J. At first, he ignores her, preferring to work with other members, but he eventually recognizes her powerful abilities and begins to mentor her, even providing her with glasses to improve her accuracy in combat. His role evolves from a reluctant supervisor to a protector, as he repeatedly saves Robin from threats, including those from their own organization. His key relationships include his half-brother, Shunji Nagira, an attorney whose personality is the opposite of his own; a romantic relationship with Tōko Masaki, the daughter of the STN-J administrator, which he ends after Robin’s arrival; and a long-standing professional respect for his colleague, Karasuma.
Amon undergoes significant development throughout the series. He begins with a rigid, black-and-white stance on hunting witches, but his experiences with Robin force him to confront his own beliefs and heritage. When Solomon later labels Robin a witch and orders her execution, Amon is tasked with hunting her but finds himself unable to kill her. Instead, he turns against his orders to help her escape. In the final resolution, he volunteers to become Robin's watchman, a role in which he will stay by her side to help create a future where witches and humans can coexist, but will also be the one to terminate her if she ever turns destructive.
Amon possesses notable abilities as a senior hunter. He is a highly proficient fighter, primarily using an Orbo air gun, which fires darts or pellets containing the green, craft-negating liquid Orbo, and he is known for his considerable accuracy with the weapon. Although he is a Seed with the potential for witch abilities, his own Craft remains dormant throughout the series, a state some theorize is suppressed by the Orbo amulet he wears around his neck.
