Description
Horohoro, whose real name is Usui Horokeu, is a young shaman from the Ainu tribe of Hokkaido, Japan. He is known for his cheerful, boastful, and hot-blooded personality, often acting impulsively and with great confidence in his abilities. However, this exterior masks a more sensitive and emotionally burdened individual. He cares deeply for nature and his friends, and he becomes serious and focused when faced with dangerous situations. He has a strong competitive streak, particularly with his friend and rival, Tao Ren, with whom he constantly argues, though this bickering belies a genuine mutual respect and loyalty.

Horohoro's primary motivation for participating in the Shaman Fight is to become the Shaman King. His stated dream is to create a vast field of butterbur plants, which would serve as a new home for the Koropokkuru, the small nature spirits with whom his Ainu ancestors have coexisted. His guardian spirit, Kororo, is one of these Koropokkuru. This dream is rooted in a tragic past involving a girl named Damuko, who gave him the nickname Horohoro. After a series of events where he felt responsible for her death, he abandoned his birth name to carry this nickname as a form of penance. It is later revealed that Kororo is actually the spirit of Damuko, who returned to be with him.

Within the story, Horohoro is introduced as the first opponent and later a close ally of the protagonist, Asakura Yoh. He becomes a key member of their friend group and a determined fighter in the Shaman Fight. His significant relationships include his younger sister, Pirika, who is often shown dragging him away for harsh training sessions, and his father, Usui Rikan, the chief of their tribe. He also forms a strong bond with Tao Ren, acting as both a rival and a steadfast teammate with Chocolove McDonell in their team named The Ren. Horohoro's development throughout the series is marked by his struggle to overcome the guilt of his past and unlock his true potential as a shaman. Initially prone to losing focus, he learns to embrace his heritage and inner strength, eventually being recognized as one of the Five Elemental Warriors, which grants him the Spirit of Rain as a new ally.

Horohoro's notable abilities revolve around the manipulation of ice, a power that aligns with his Ainu heritage and love for the cold north. He performs Oversouls by fusing his spirit, Kororo, with a medium. His primary mediums are a snowboard, which he uses for speed and ice-based attacks, and later an Ikupasuy, a traditional Ainu carved ritual implement given to him by his sister. Using this, he can freeze water vapor in the air to create barriers and projectiles, or to flash-freeze opponents. His attacks include techniques like Nipopo Punch and Mososo Kuruppe, and his power level is measured as a Furyoku of 120,000 at one point in the series. As an Ainu shaman, he holds a deep respect for the principle of "the strong survive," but equally values gratitude and respect for nature, refusing to kill an animal or person without purpose. This philosophy is central to his identity and his growth as a shaman.
