Description
Bason is the guardian spirit of Tao Ren, serving as the loyal companion and primary ally to the young heir of the Tao family. In life, Bason was a renowned Chinese Wujiang, a member of the ancient military class, who lived approximately 1800 years ago during an era of constant warfare. He was a formidable warrior who rode into battle on a horse named Hei-Tao and, through countless conflicts, mastered a vast array of weapons and martial arts techniques, becoming a true Master of Arms. Upon his death, his spirit remained bound to the Tao family, eventually being assigned as the guardian ghost for the young master, Tao Ren.

In terms of personality, Bason initially mirrors his master’s cold and cruel demeanor, appearing harsh and unyielding. He is fiercely dedicated to his duty and possesses an overwhelming sense of loyalty to the Tao family and specifically to Ren, whom he addresses as "Young Master". Despite his formidable and sometimes intimidating presence, Bason is deeply caring and profoundly devoted to Ren’s well-being. This devotion is so strong that he has been known to break down in tears when Ren is in peril or imprisoned, revealing a more emotional and sentimental side beneath his warrior exterior. His primary motivation is to serve Ren absolutely, to see him grow strong, and to help him achieve his goal of becoming the Shaman King.

Within the story, Bason serves as the source of Ren’s shamanic power and combat ability. Their initial method of fighting involved Spirit Integration, where Ren would dominate Bason’s spirit to enhance his own physical prowess and weapon, a kwan dao. As Ren learns more advanced techniques, he develops the Over Soul, using his kwan dao as a medium to manifest Bason as a gigantic, golden battle spirit. Bason’s role evolves from being a tool for domination to a true partner. His most significant relationships are with his master, Ren, and with the spirit Amidamaru. Bason and Amidamaru begin as hostile and competitive rivals, reflecting the initial enmity between their masters, Ren and Yoh Asakura. However, as the series progresses, their rivalry softens into a friendship and mutual respect. Bason also has a deep, unspoken hope for a more personal connection with Ren, quietly wishing for a friendship that the initially aloof Ren is slow to acknowledge.

Bason undergoes significant development alongside his master. As Ren begins to soften and grow through his interactions with Yoh and his friends, Bason’s disposition likewise becomes more pleasant and open. He transitions from being an "empty shell" merely following orders to a spirit who acts out of genuine loyalty and affection, even going so far as to seek help from Yoh’s group when Ren is captured by his own family. This marks a crucial development, as Bason takes initiative to save his master, demonstrating his agency and deep emotional bond. When Ren receives the Tao family’s heirloom, the Bâo-Lèi Sword, Bason is refined into a higher-level Seirei-class spirit, granting him access to his full millennia of combat knowledge and enabling him to evolve his Over Soul into more powerful forms like the Super Bushin and Bushin Fish Fin.

Notable abilities include a wide range of attacks performed through Over Soul. One of his most basic and iconic techniques is the Zhong Hua Zhan Wu, or Vorpal Dance, a devastating series of rapid slashes capable of cutting through multiple targets. In his initial Over Soul form, known as Golden Over Soul, Bason manifests as a giant golden spear and can perform attacks like the Golden Punch and the Bason Double Golden Sledgehammer. By channeling more furyoku, Ren can materialize Bason’s colossal upper body in the Big Over Soul form, allowing Bason to wield the oversouled kwan dao himself for the Super Golden Vorpal Dance. He can also integrate the spirit of his former horse, Hei-Tao, with Ren’s living horse Bai-Feng to perform the Perfect Re-enactment of the Vorpal Dance, a charge of tremendous speed and power. After evolving into a Seirei-class spirit with the Bâo-Lèi Sword, Bason gains the ability to transform into any weapon he has ever mastered. This culminates in the Bushin Fish Fin, an armor-type Over Soul that grants Ren control over lightning, allowing for powerful electric attacks such as Raiso and the devastating Thunder God of the Nine Skies.
