TV-Series
Description
Born as the son of Kyogo Monou, the priest of the Togakushi Shrine, and his wife Saya, Fuuma Monou spent his early childhood as a close friend to Kamui Shiro and his own younger sister, Kotori. The three shared a promise where Kamui would protect Kotori and Fuuma would protect Kamui. Following the violent death of his mother, Fuuma spent the next seven years becoming a dutiful son, helping his father at the shrine, and acting as a protective older brother to Kotori. By the time he enters high school, he has grown into a quiet, stoic, and remarkably popular student who excels in sports, yet his silent demeanor often intimidates his peers. He appears to be the model of a responsible, gentle young man who helps elders and looks after those around him.
This kind exterior is shattered by a destiny he cannot control. Fuuma is revealed to be the twin star of his childhood friend, a being fated to take the position opposing whatever choice Kamui makes. When Kamui decides to become a Dragon of Heaven to save mankind, Fuuma is automatically forced to transform into the Kamui of the Dragons of Earth, a group dedicated to eliminating humanity to preserve the planet. This transformation replaces his gentle personality with a cold-blooded, sadistic alter-ego. He immediately uses his newly awakened powers to torture Kamui and brutally murders his own sister, Kotori, as his first act as a villain. This new persona refers to himself simply as Kamui, often called the Dark Kamui or Shadow Kamui to distinguish him from his former self and the series' protagonist.
As the leader of the Dragons of Earth, Fuuma is driven by the objective of destroying mankind. His most defining trait in this role is his profound ability to perceive the true, heartfelt wishes of any person. He seems compelled to grant these desires, though the results are often tragic and lead to the death of the wisher or their loved ones. He operates on a philosophy that he is merely enabling people to achieve what they truly want, even if it is death, and in doing so, he is expressing his own unknown wish. Despite his terrifying power and ruthless actions, this alter-ego is not purely malicious. He can display surprising tenderness towards certain allies like Kakyou and Nataku, and he once warned a young girl to flee the city with her mother because she did not wish to die. His own allies, like Kanoe, are sometimes frightened by his enigmatic nature, as his true desires and the motivations behind his actions remain a mystery. The central mystery of the story revolves around the fact that Fuuma's own wish can only be granted by Kamui.
Fuuma's central role in the narrative is that of Kamui's foil and primary antagonist. His relationship with Kamui is the core conflict of the series, moving from a childhood bond of protection to a deadly, fated battle. He serves as a mirror to Kamui, forcing the protagonist to confront his own deepest desires. After his transformation, he seeks out and kills the members of the Dragons of Heaven, working to destroy the spiritual barriers protecting Tokyo. His development is primarily defined by this dramatic and tragic shift from a protective friend to the story's main villain, a change so drastic that his creators found it one of the strongest and darkest in their careers. In the television series, his arc concludes when a mortally wounded Kamui sacrifices his own life to create a barrier that restores Fuuma to his original personality. In the feature film, his fate is more tragic, as he is beheaded by Kamui, who then mourns him.
Upon awakening his powers, Fuuma possesses abilities that make him the equal of Kamui and likely the most powerful of all the Dragons. He wields a Sacred Sword, a powerful weapon created from the death of his mother, which he uses in combat as a skilled swordsman. He has heightened physical capabilities, including superhuman leaps, speed, and accelerated healing. As Kamui's twin star, he also possesses potent telekinetic powers. His most unique and central ability is his power to see into a person's heart and grant their true wish, a talent that often manifests in seeing his face transform into that of the person the observer most desires to see. He is also one of the few characters who seems to have foresight into how the final battle will end.
