Description
Mirai Yashima, later known as Mirai Noa, is a central character in the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam franchise, first appearing in the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. She is the daughter of Shu Yashima, the CEO of Yashima Heavy Industries and a former high-ranking official in the Earth Federation government. Born on Kyushu, Japan, on Earth in U.C. 0061, Mirai was raised in a wealthy and politically influential family. From a young age, she dreamed of becoming an astronaut and trained as a space glider pilot, earning a license for a cruiser-class vessel. After her father's death before the outbreak of the One Year War, she moved to the space colony Side 7 for safety. When Zeon forces attacked Side 7, the crew of the Earth Federation assault carrier White Base was decimated, and Mirai, among the civilian refugees, was the only person aboard with the required piloting experience. She volunteered to take the helm and was formally commissioned as an ensign in the Earth Federation Forces. Mirai quickly proved herself as an exceptionally skilled helmsman, displaying tactical awareness and calm under pressure that saved the White Base on numerous occasions. She became the de facto second-in-command to Acting Captain Bright Noa, who trusted her judgment and frequently sought her opinion. Mirai also assumed a maternal role toward the younger members of the crew, providing emotional support and stability. Her personality initially reflected insecurity after her father's death, but through the crucible of war she developed confidence, strength, and a backbone. She is characterized by her strong principles, valuing courage and integrity. This is demonstrated in her rejection of her pre-arranged fiancé, Cameron Bloom, who had fled to the neutral Side 6 to avoid the war; Mirai considered his cowardice and his failure to search for her after her father's death as unforgivable. Later, she entered a romantic relationship with Lieutenant Sleggar Law, a veteran pilot who joined the White Base at Jaburo. Before his death in the Battle of Solomon, Sleggar gave her his mother's ring, acknowledging that she deserved better than a soldier whose life was short. The loss deeply affected Mirai and also brought her closer to Bright. After the One Year War, Mirai married Bright Noa and took his surname. The couple had two children, Hathaway and Cheimin. During the Gryps Conflict, when Bright defected to the AEUG to oppose the Titans, Mirai spirited their children away from the Federation-controlled Jaburo base to prevent them from being used as hostages. While waiting for passage off Earth in Hong Kong, she encountered Amuro Ray and Kamille Bidan, and was captured by Titans forces. She used her captivity to share insight with Kamille about Amuro's past trauma, helping to bridge understanding. She later recorded a video message for Bright that reached him aboard the Argama. During the Second Neo Zeon War, Mirai and Cheimin attempted to evacuate Earth to rejoin Bright, who commanded the Londo Bell task force. At a spaceport in Hong Kong, unaware that Char Aznable was about to drop an asteroid on Earth, she sacrificed her own seat on a shuttle to ensure her son Hathaway's escape, promising to follow on the next flight. She and Cheimin were unable to leave and remained trapped on Earth, where they witnessed the Axis Shock phenomenon at the war's end. Throughout the Universal Century conflicts, Mirai's abilities extended beyond piloting; like Amuro Ray and Sayla Mass, she displayed Newtype abilities, including enhanced intuition and spatial awareness that contributed to her unparalleled skills as a helmsman. Her tactical input complemented Bright's command decisions, and her steady presence anchored the White Base crew. After marriage, she continued to demonstrate resilience and devotion to her family, making difficult decisions to protect them. Her journey from a sheltered, wealthy civilian to a battle-hardened officer and mother figure underscores her development into one of the franchise's most respected and enduring characters.
