Description
Lum is the female protagonist of the anime and manga series Urusei Yatsura. She is an oni alien from the planet Oniboshi and the daughter of the alien invasion leader. Her most recognizable appearance consists of a tiger-striped bikini, go-go boots, and two small horns on her head. She has the natural ability to fly and to generate powerful electrical discharges, which she often uses when angered. Her horns are the source of these powers; if they are removed or bound with specially blessed ribbons, she loses her flight and electricity and becomes an ordinary human girl. In the original manga her hair was iridescent, but in the anime it was rendered as a distinctive shade of cyan.

Lum came to Earth as part of an oni invasion. A game of tag was arranged to decide Earth’s fate, and the human Ataru Moroboshi was chosen as her opponent. When Ataru caught Lum, he shouted “Now I can get married!”—a reference to a promise from his girlfriend Shinobu. Lum, however, misinterpreted this as a direct proposal of marriage to herself and accepted. Because engagements are sacred on her home planet, she has since considered herself Ataru’s wife and moved into his family’s home, much to his dismay.

Her personality is a blend of childlike naivety and fierce possessiveness. She is generally cheerful, warm, and generous, but she becomes violently jealous whenever Ataru flirts with other women. Her anger manifests as high-voltage shocks, though she quickly returns to her good-natured self once the threat passes. She speaks with a distinctive Sendai dialect and frequently ends her sentences with “tcha.” She refers to Ataru only as “Darling” and is completely devoted to him, despite his constant philandering.

Lum is highly intelligent and adept with advanced alien technology, but she is extremely naive about human customs and social norms. This often leads to misunderstandings and comedic disasters. She carries various gadgets hidden in her bikini top, such as shrinking rays or time-travel devices, and her UFO is filled with more technology. She is a terrible cook by human standards, favoring extremely spicy oni cuisine that can distort the appearance of anyone who eats it. She drinks Tabasco sauce as if it were water.

Her role in the story is that of a disruptive force who transforms the mundane world of Tomobiki into a setting for constant alien-related absurdity. She is the female lead and the primary love interest, but the series’ main character is Ataru. Her presence at Tomobiki High School as a student is the catalyst for many of the series’ comedic and romantic conflicts. She is extremely popular with the boys at school, but she rejects all advances because of her loyalty to Ataru.

Key relationships include her fiancé Ataru, her younger cousin Ten (who also causes chaos), and her childhood friends from Oniboshi: Benten, Oyuki, and Ran. Ran holds a grudge against Lum for always escaping blame during their school days. Lum was once engaged to a handsome oni named Rei, but she broke it off because she found him boring.

Over the course of the series, Lum undergoes little personal change; she remains a static character defined by her unwavering love for Ataru and her extraterrestrial innocence. The narrative focuses instead on how her presence affects those around her. Her relationship with Ataru is a comedic parody of a traditional Japanese husband-and-wife dynamic, with a sharp gender-role reversal in which the wife is the aggressive pursuer and the husband tries to escape.

Notable abilities aside from flight and electricity include superhuman strength, the use of alien gadgets, and a resilience that lets her survive situations that would be fatal to humans. She can also fly at high speeds and generate force fields. Her physical strength is frequently used as a comedic punchline.

Lum is considered one of the earliest and most iconic examples of the “magical girlfriend” archetype in anime and manga, and her design and personality have influenced countless later characters.
