Description
Hitomi Kanzaki is the central protagonist of the story, a fifteen-year-old first-year high school student living a relatively ordinary life in Japan. She lives with her parents and younger brother and is a member of her school's track team, where her friend Yukari encourages her to pursue a romantic interest in the team's senior, Amano Susumu. Beyond her athletic pursuits, Hitomi has a long-standing hobby of fortune-telling using tarot cards and has always possessed latent psychic abilities, which previously only manifested as vague hunches or surprisingly accurate predictions for her classmates. This all changes when she is transported from her high school's track field to the mysterious world of Gaea, finding herself stranded on a planet where the Earth and Moon hang visibly in the sky.
In terms of personality, Hitomi is characterized as a spirited, bright, and capable girl who faces her sudden displacement with surprising resilience, though the emotional toll of her circumstances does affect her. She is friendly and easygoing but can be irritated by rude behavior, particularly from the initially abrasive prince Van Fanel. As the story progresses, she demonstrates a strong moral compass, becoming deeply disturbed by the violence of war and the thrill Van sometimes experiences in battle, forcefully confronting him about how it changes him. Her desire to see the good in people and to prevent bloodshed becomes a driving force, even as she struggles with her own anxieties. These anxieties are a critical part of her character, as her fear and worry about her disturbing visions of future tragedies have the unintended effect of making those very tragedies come true.
Hitomi's primary motivation throughout the narrative is initially to find a way back to Earth and to Amano, the object of her schoolgirl crush. However, her role in the story quickly evolves from a displaced ordinary student into a pivotal figure in Gaea's conflict with the Zaibach Empire. Her latent psychic powers explode in strength on Gaea, frequently barraging her with disturbing images of what is to come. This ability to see the future, combined with her tarot readings, makes her a sought-after asset. Her powers are tied to a mysterious pendant given to her by her grandmother, which is later revealed to be an Atlantean artifact capable of influencing fate. This connection links her directly to the giant mecha Escaflowne and the empire's ambition to control destiny itself, forcing her to come to terms with her role in the potential salvation or destruction of this new world.
Her key relationships are the emotional core of her development. She forms a close bond with Van Fanel, the young king of the ruined kingdom of Fanelia, who pilots Escaflowne. Initially a relationship marked by bickering and mutual frustration, Hitomi gradually becomes a moral anchor for Van, serving as the conscience that questions his increasing thirst for battle. This bond deepens into romance, though she is conflicted by her attraction to Allen Schezar, a charismatic knight of Asturia who bears a striking resemblance in appearance, manner, and even voice to her beloved Amano from Earth. This love triangle reflects Hitomi's internal struggle between her past life and her present circumstances.
Over the course of the series, Hitomi undergoes significant development, transforming from a passive fortune-teller who fears her visions into an active participant who learns she can alter the future. A key aspect of this development is the realization that her own anxiety and negative thoughts cause her terrible predictions to manifest, teaching her that the future is not set in stone. Her journey culminates in a profound Love Epiphany, where a brief return to Earth makes her finally understand that her true feelings belong to Van. By the end, she gains such control over her abilities that she can directly alter the future on a whim, effectively becoming a being of immense power who cannot remain in Gaea and must return to her own world.
Notable abilities include her latent psychic powers which manifest as incredibly accurate precognitive visions and the ability to read the future with her tarot cards. On Gaea, she can also use a location ability to pinpoint invisible objects, such as cloaked enemy mechas. Her athletic training as a runner, particularly in the 100-meter dash, proves invaluable, granting her the speed and agility to escape danger, leap across vast chasms, and serve as an action survivor in a world of mechas and war. Her mystical pendant is not merely a keepsake but a focus that amplifies her abilities and serves as an Atlantean artifact that can realize the dreams of its user, though her anxiety often corrupts this power to create disasters.
