Description
Kaiju No. 10 is a formidable numbered kaiju who serves as a major antagonist in the story. He is first introduced launching a large-scale assault on the Tachikawa Base of the Defense Force, leading a swarm of wyvern-type kaiju in an attack meant to capture human soldiers. His origins lie with Kaiju No. 9, who created him as a prototype, establishing him as an early model in a larger scheme. Described as a massive, muscular humanoid, his appearance is often likened to a Western knight in full armor. His body is covered in a tough, crimson carapace, and his face is dominated by a single eye set within a cross-shaped cavity on his skull. His mouth has a unique double-row structure, featuring sharp outer fangs and flatter molars behind them. In his normal state, he stands about five meters tall, but he possesses a gigantification ability that allows him to grow to an immense twenty-five meters, during which he sprouts a prominent beetle-like horn and can even generate additional eyes across his body to eliminate any blind spots.
The personality of Kaiju No. 10 is defined by a singular, powerful drive: the love of combat. He is a prideful and highly intelligent being, capable of complex speech and strategic thinking, which sets him apart from more bestial kaiju. His primary motivation is not conquest or destruction for its own sake, but the sheer thrill of facing a worthy opponent. He actively seeks out the strongest members of the Defense Force to challenge, viewing them as prey and becoming exhilarated by a good fight. This obsession transcends any loyalty to his own kind; he cares not if his enemy is human or kaiju, only that the battle is thrilling. While he prefers to fight alone, his sheer presence and power act as a command signal, allowing him to control large flocks of the otherwise independent wyvern-type kaiju, demonstrating a natural charisma and leadership.
In the story, Kaiju No. 10's role begins as a direct physical threat during the Raid on Tachikawa Base arc. He identifies Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina as the strongest opponent present and engages him in a destructive and intense duel. Despite being repeatedly cut by Hoshina's blades, he demonstrates incredible resilience, regenerating limbs and even using damage to his core to trigger his massive growth transformation, increasing his fortitude level to 9.0. Ultimately, he is defeated by the combined efforts of Soshiro Hoshina, Captain Mina Ashiro, and Kikoru Shinomiya, leaving him as nothing more than a severed head still connected to a damaged core.
Even in this defeated state, Kaiju No. 10's unique personality drives the next phase of his existence. Unwilling to admit true defeat, he declares their battle a draw and, still exhilarated from the fight, expresses a powerful desire to continue engaging with Hoshina. This leads to an unprecedented turn of events where he willingly offers his body to be turned into a weapon, demanding to be wielded by the man who bested him. He is subsequently transformed into the first sentient Numbers Weapon by Izumo Tech, becoming a dark-grey, scaly combat suit worn by Soshiro Hoshina. His key relationship is almost exclusively with Hoshina, viewing him as a worthy partner and rival. He betrays his creator, No. 9, without hesitation to pursue this new path, and the two share a dynamic fraught with friction, as Hoshina's controlled tactics clash with No. 10's brutal, direct instincts, yet marked by a growing mutual respect and battlefield synergy.
His development from a monstrous enemy to a powerful, albeit volatile, ally is central to his character. While remaining arrogant and bloodthirsty, his motivations evolve from seeking to devour strong enemies to fighting alongside one. As a weapon, he retains his full consciousness and will, creating a parasitic-like symbiosis with his wielder. He provides crucial information about Kaiju No. 9 in exchange for this arrangement and later proves instrumental in battles against other powerful kaiju, even sacrificing part of himself to protect Hoshina.
Regarding his capabilities, Kaiju No. 10 is exceptionally powerful. His physical strength is immense, with a simple flick of his finger capable of creating shockwaves that crack distant buildings and a full punch able to demolish large structures. His speed and reflexes are extraordinary, allowing him to deliver a flurry of blows that Hoshina compares to a falling meteor. His hard carapace offers defense even greater than that of Kaiju No. 8, and he possesses a rapid regeneration factor that allows him to instantly reattach or regrow severed body parts, including limbs and his head. His most fearsome ability is his gigantification, which not only increases his size and power but also allows him to shapeshift, growing additional limbs and covering his body in eyes to eliminate any blind spots. Even when reduced to a severed head with a fortitude level of 5.7, he remains a significant threat, capable of commanding all remaining wyvern kaiju to sacrifice themselves in a final, massive explosion.
