Kogoro Mori operates a private detective agency in Tokyo. A former police officer in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One, he served alongside Inspector Megure. Recognized for his marksmanship and role in capturing criminals during his police career, he was not noted as a strong investigator. Leaving the force roughly ten years before the main events, he established his own agency. His marriage to Eri Kisaki produced a daughter, Ran Mori, but the couple separated long-term, partly due to his flirtatious behavior around attractive women and fondness for alcohol.
Kogoro possesses an inflated sense of his own detective abilities and demonstrates laziness and unprofessional conduct during investigations. He frequently makes sarcastic or blunt remarks about clients and suspects, often jumping to conclusions based on superficial evidence. He regularly enjoys beer and displays a notable obsession with pop idol Yoko Okino, collecting her merchandise and posters. Despite these traits, a serious and capable side emerges when cases involve personal stakes, especially concerning his family. In these situations, his deductive skills and professionalism improve significantly, revealing better logical reasoning and a keen understanding of interpersonal relationships than he typically exhibits.
Generally considered incompetent, he nonetheless follows basic investigative procedures like questioning witnesses. He retains physical prowess from his past as the ace of his university judo team. His detective career improved significantly after Conan Edogawa began covertly assisting him. Using a tranquilizer dart and voice-changing technology, Conan induces a sleep-like state in Kogoro, presenting deductions through him while Kogoro remains unaware. This led to Kogoro gaining fame as "Sleeping Kogoro," though he attributes the solved cases to his own subconscious abilities during these states.
Within "The Scarlet Bullet" events, Kogoro is hired by John Boyd, a British automobile company CEO, due to Boyd's fear of being targeted by a kidnapper replicating a 15-year-old WSG incident in Boston. Kogoro undertakes protective duties at Nagoya Airport during the Hyper Linear superconducting train's inaugural run. He expresses frustration upon discovering his daughter Ran and Conan present. During a sabotage incident involving vaporized helium released into a medical area, Kogoro, along with others including Boyd, loses consciousness. Upon waking, he participates in the immediate investigation focused on Boyd's subsequent disappearance.
Kogoro shows moments of genuine care for his family, particularly Eri. During the Bourbon Arc, he secretly purchased an expensive necklace for Eri's birthday intending reconciliation, though a gift mix-up caused embarrassment. His dedication resurfaced when Eri became implicated in a murder case; he diligently worked to solve it and clear her name, demonstrating competence under personal duress. Across media, including films, he often provides comic relief through laziness, vanity, and reactions to beautiful women, yet consistently shows underlying loyalty and protective instincts toward Ran and Eri when they face danger.
