TV-Series
Description
Hiroshi Agasa is the inventor and neighbor living next door to the Kudo residence, and he is the first person to learn that Conan Edogawa is actually the shrunken Shinichi Kudo. At the start of the series, he is fifty-two years old and has known Shinichi and Ran since their childhoods, acting as a close family friend and a sort of substitute uncle or grandfather figure while Shinichis parents are abroad.
Agasa has a jovial, outgoing, and caring personality, which makes him popular within his community. He is notably paternal, especially in his interactions with the young protagonists, and he shows a particular fondness for pasta and tomato juice. Despite being a bachelor, he greatly enjoys the company of the children and often takes them on trips in his distinctively unreliable Volkswagen Beetle, though these excursions frequently lead to criminal cases rather than peaceful vacations. One of his notable quirks is a love for puns and wordplay, often telling jokes that the children find quite poor. His name itself is a pun, as his given name Hiroshi is written with the same kanji as the word hakase, meaning professor or doctor, and his family name is inspired by the mystery writer Agatha Christie.
His primary motivation is to support and protect Shinichi. After Shinichi is shrunk by the APTX 4869 poison, Agasa is the one who advises him to keep his identity secret from everyone to avoid the Black Organization harming his loved ones. To help Shinichi operate as Conan Edogawa, Agasa invents a wide array of gadgets, allowing the young detective to continue his work surreptitiously. Agasa also helps complete Conans cover by enrolling him in Teitan Elementary School, which leads to Conan forming the Detective Boys with his new classmates.
Agasas role in the story extends far beyond that of a simple inventor. He serves as a confidant and a key ally for Conan, a trusted adult who is aware of the danger posed by the Black Organization. He provides a safe haven for the children at his house. This role deepened when he found a young girl, Shiho Miyano, collapsed from exhaustion near Shinichis house after she escaped from the organization. Agasa took her in, learned her true identity as the creator of the poison, and helped her assume her new identity as Ai Haibara. As a result, Agasa becomes her guardian and another person who shares the central secret of the series.
His key relationships include his deeply caring, if sometimes comical, bond with Ai Haibara. Despite her young appearance, Haibara frequently acts as a mother figure to Agasa, lecturing him about his diet and confiscating unhealthy foods to manage his weight. He also has a close friendship with Conan, built on mutual trust and a shared mission. With Conans parents, Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, Agasa maintains a longstanding friendship and is entrusted with their son's secret. A significant part of his background involves a romantic subplot from his youth; he once had a tender first love with a classmate named Fusae Kinoshita. Years later, it was revealed that Fusae, now the famous designer Fusae Campbell Kinoshita, had waited for him at a designated spot every ten years, leading to a bittersweet reunion where old feelings were acknowledged but the relationship remained in the past.
Agasas development is shown through his increasing involvement in Conans fight against the Black Organization. While initially just a helpful neighbor, he evolves into an active participant in the plans against the organization, providing not only gadgets but also strategic support and a place of refuge. He assists other allies, such as creating a voice-changing device for Shuichi Akai when the FBI agent needed to disguise himself. Notably, he is also one of the few people who knows the secret behind the mysterious Subaru Okiya.
As an inventor, Agasa possesses high intelligence and a claimed advanced degree, though he describes himself as a genius who often invents things that end up as junk. Nevertheless, his creations are essential to the series plot. His most notable inventions for Conan include the voice-changing bow tie, which allows Conan to mimic any voice; the tranquilizer dart watch, used to incapacitate suspects; the turbo-powered sneakers, which amplify Conans kicking strength; the omnidirectional tracking glasses; a solar-powered skateboard; and the adjustable elastic suspenders. He also created the badge communicators and flashlight watches for all members of the Detective Boys to ensure their safety during their adventures.
