Description
Rem Saverem joined Project SEEDS, humanity's deep space colonization effort, seeking purpose after her lover Alex's death. Serving as a crew member, she encountered two infant humanoid Plants during a mission. When others advocated eliminating them, Rem intervened, securing their safety. She became the primary guardian and caretaker for these twins, named Vash and Knives, teaching them human values like kindness, empathy, and education.

Rem embodied compassion and nurturing, defined by pacifism and a profound belief in life's sanctity. She wore simple attire—a plain white t-shirt, blue pants, and shoes—with long black hair and brown eyes. Her philosophy emphasized non-violence and protecting all living beings, often using red geraniums to illustrate teachings about life and hope. Vash deeply embraced these values, forming his lifelong pacifism, while Knives grew distrustful of humans after witnessing crew cruelty towards Plants.

The twins reached adolescence rapidly within a year. During this time, crew tensions escalated. Crewman Steve abused Vash out of jealousy. Knives manipulated events, falsely accusing Steve of raping crew member Mary, leading to Steve's unjust cryogenic imprisonment and death. This culminated when crewman Rowan murdered Mary after she rejected his confession, during which he admitted tampering with Steve's cryogenic tube. When Rowan threatened Knives, Rem placed herself protectively in the line of fire. The captain intervened, ejecting Rowan and Mary's body into space, leaving Rem distraught over the loss and the captain's lost faith in redemption.

Knives then murdered the captain and sabotaged the SEEDS fleet, setting the ships on a collision course with the desert planet Gunsmoke (Noman's Land). Rem guided Vash and Knives to escape pods but chose to remain aboard the doomed ship. Her final act recalibrated the fleet's trajectory, ensuring the colonists' survival at the cost of her own life in the explosion. Her last words to Vash implored him to "take care of Knives," a plea that haunted him long after.

Rem's influence persisted. Vash adopted his signature spiked hairstyle at her suggestion, modeled after Alex, maintaining it for over a century as tribute. Her favorite red geranium inspired the color of Vash's iconic coat, symbolizing his commitment to her ideals. Her surname, Saverem, echoed her role in saving both the twins and humanity, interpreted as "Save Them." Across adaptations, her sacrifice and teachings remained the emotional core driving Vash's commitment to peace on Gunsmoke.
