Description
Denji is the protagonist of the Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, a young man living in a world terrorized by devils. His background is one of extreme poverty and isolation. Before the events of the film, he was a devil hunter for the Yakuza, living in debt and destitution. His only companion was Pochita, a small, dog-like devil who is also the Chainsaw Devil. After being betrayed and killed by the Yakuza, Pochita fused with Denji's dead body, becoming his heart. This transformed Denji into a devil-human hybrid, granting him the power to become Chainsaw Man by pulling a cord on his chest.

Following this transformation, Denji was recruited into the Public Safety Devil Hunters, a government organization. At the start of the Reze Arc, Denji is living in a small apartment with his fellow hunters, Aki Hayakawa and the fiend Power, and has begun to develop a sense of belonging and stability, however modest. His personality is defined by his brutal honesty, crudeness, and extremely simple, earthly desires. Having grown up with nothing, his primary motivations are to enjoy the small pleasures in life: eating good food, having a roof over his head, and experiencing physical affection and intimacy, which he craves deeply. He is unpolished and lacks a formal education, unable to read or swim, which makes him self-conscious.

Throughout the Reze Arc, Denji is manipulated by two central female figures. His primary driving force is his infatuation with his boss, Makima, whose approval he desperately seeks. His role in the story becomes complicated when he meets Reze, a charming girl who works at a café. For Denji, Reze represents the ideal of a normal, carefree teenage life, something he has never experienced. She offers to teach him to swim, takes him on a date to a school and a festival, and asks him to run away with her. This relationship represents a significant development for Denji, as he is forced to navigate complex emotions beyond basic physical urges. He is confronted with the possibility of abandoning his new, comfortable life with Public Safety for a chance at a simple, happy existence with someone who seems to genuinely care for him.

The story, however, hinges on betrayal. Reze is revealed to be the Bomb Devil, a Soviet super-soldier sent to capture Denji's heart. After her betrayal, where she brutally dismembers him, Denji is forced into a violent confrontation. His development in this arc is marked by his refusal to give up on the connection he felt with her. Despite her attempt to kill him and the massacre of his colleagues, Denji cannot bring himself to hate Reze. He defeats her in their final battle by using his chains to drag her into the ocean, neutralizing her explosive powers. Even in victory, he does not kill her. Instead, he asks her to run away with him and waits for her at their meeting spot, clinging to the hope that her feelings for him were genuine.

As a devil-human hybrid, Denji has several notable abilities. He can transform into his Chainsaw Man form by pulling a cord on his chest, at which point chainsaws sprout from his head and arms. He possesses superhuman strength and speed, as well as a potent healing factor; he can regenerate lost limbs and survive fatal wounds as long as he drinks blood. In the Reze Arc, Denji demonstrates an expanded mastery of his powers. He learns that his chains can detach from his body, allowing him to use them in versatile new ways, such as tethering himself to an ally to use as a mount or binding an enemy. His most cunning tactical use of his ability is using his chains to grapple Reze and drag them both into the ocean, exploiting a weakness in her devil powers. His key relationships in this film are with Makima, for whom he feels a mix of affection and devotion like a loyal pet, and Reze, whose brief kindness offers him a vision of a normal life and a genuine romantic connection.
