Description
Born in the Country of Glaciers to the ice maiden Hina and an unknown fire demon, Hiei's very existence violated koorime law, branding him an "imiko" (cursed child). Shortly after birth, his mother's friend Rui threw him off a mountain. He survived the fall but was abandoned in the Demon World, left only with an icy tear stone shed by his weeping mother; this stone offered him fleeting emotional calm until lost years later in battle.

Raised by Demon World bandits, Hiei embraced a brutal personality mirroring his fire demon lineage and earned his name from an unidentified bandit. Achieving A-class demon status through hand-to-hand combat by age five, he later sought his birthplace and the lost tear stone. This quest drove him to implant the Jagan Eye, a psychic third eye, using the stolen Conjuring Blade. The procedure drastically depleted his innate power, forcing the surgeon Shigure to train him in swordsmanship for compensation. His search ultimately led to stealing Spirit World treasures and fleeing to the Human World, where he clashed with Yusuke Urameshi.

Physically, Hiei is notably short, standing at 4'10" during the Dark Tournament and later documented at 5'3". He sports spiky black hair with distinctive white streaks, crimson eyes, and a peach-tan complexion. Concealed beneath a white headband, his Jagan Eye features a purple iris. He favors all-black attire: a cloak-like jacket with a white collar, black pants tucked into boots, and occasionally a sleeveless undershirt. A dragon tattoo covers his right arm after mastering the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, replacing bandages once used to contain the volatile technique. His appearance remains consistent except for a temporary Chinese-style battle costume worn during the Dark Tournament.

Personality-wise, Hiei presents as aloof, cynical, and misanthropic, frequently scorning human emotions and friendships. He maintains distance but develops respect for teammates like Kurama and Yusuke. Ruthless in battle regardless of an opponent's age or gender, he follows an honor code against fighting weaker opponents at full strength. His arrogance often leads to underestimating foes. Despite outward detachment, he harbors fierce protectiveness toward his twin sister Yukina, keeping their relationship secret. He forms a significant bond with the demon warlord Mukuro, whom he deeply respects; their dynamic includes ambiguous undertones Kurama once termed a "lover's spat," though Hiei never clarifies its nature.

Hiei's primary abilities stem from the Jagan Eye, granting telepathy, telekinesis, mind control, and aura perception. His signature technique, the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, summons a destructive energy dragon he later masters to avoid self-harm. He wields hyperspeed movement capable of creating afterimages (often mistaken for teleportation) and levitates or flies via energy manipulation. Trained by Shigure, he displays exceptional skill with a katana. A secondary technique, the Fist of the Mortal Flame, channels fire into his fists.

Key relationships define his path. His connection to Yukina remains unacknowledged despite covert protection. He first encounters Kurama in the Human World while searching for Yukina, forging a lasting partnership. Initially antagonistic toward Yusuke, he later joins him as a Spirit World contractor, developing mutual respect. His dynamic with Kuwabara involves constant insults masking underlying camaraderie. Recruited by Mukuro, he rises to lead her army and frees her from psychological trauma inflicted by her abusive father—an act reflecting their profound bond.

Following the Demon World Tournament, Hiei patrols Mukuro's territory for four years, returning humans who enter the Demon World with erased memories. After Yukina gifts him her tear pearl—fulfilling his life's primary purpose—Mukuro helps him find new meaning by sharing her traumatic past. He abandons his earlier plan to use the Chapter Black tape to justify human hatred; instead, he destroys it, recognizing equal capacity for depravity and civility in both humans and demons.
