Description
Koenma, son of Great King Enma and current ruler of Spirit World, serves as second-in-command, managing daily operations during his father's absences. Over 700 years old, he typically manifests as a toddler wearing a blue robe with pink trim, brown pants, black shoes, and a pacifier. This pacifier acts as a potent vessel for his spirit energy, capable of generating formidable barriers against dark forces and resurrecting the dead through accumulated spiritual power. The bib from his initial manga appearance was absent in later chapters and the anime.
When entering Human or Demon Worlds, Koenma transforms into a handsome samurai-like young man, though he occasionally reverts to his toddler form. Both forms retain the "Jr." forehead mark and pacifier. During the Three Kings Saga, he adopts casual clothing and conceals his forehead mark with a headband after disobeying his father.
In toddler form, Koenma displays childish, bossy, and occasionally abusive tendencies, frequently commanding subordinates like Jorge Saotome. He shares a sibling-like rivalry with Yusuke Urameshi but maintains a functional relationship with Botan. The original Japanese version features him using "washi" for self-reference, reflecting his advanced age.
Koenma initiates his story by resurrecting Yusuke post-sacrificial death, appointing him Spirit Detective to investigate supernatural cases. He provides mission-critical items and guidance, dispatching Yusuke to defeat the Saint Beasts and authorizing Yukina's retrieval.
