Description
Gan Fall is the current God of Skypiea, a title he has held twice. Before the events of the main story, he was the region's beloved ruler, a venerable and just leader who sought to bring peace and end the long-standing conflict between the Skypieans and the Shandia tribe. His rule came to an end when the tyrannical Enel invaded with his army, defeated Gan Fall and the Shandia simultaneously, and usurped the position of God for himself. Forced into hiding, Gan Fall survived and remained in Skypiea by taking on the role of a mercenary, calling himself the Knight of the Sky. In this capacity, he would offer his protection services in exchange for a fee.
An old but noble-hearted man, Gan Fall is defined by his deep compassion and sense of duty. He is the type of person who willingly risks his own life to aid a stranger, driven by a concern for the well-being of all Skypieans rather than any self-interest. He approaches conflicts with a diplomatic mindset, consistently favoring reconciliation and peaceful solutions over aggression or violence. This philosophy placed him in direct opposition to the centuries-old tradition of warfare with the Shandia, a conflict he earnestly worked to end. Despite his age and the hardships he endured during Enel's reign, he remains a courageous and resilient figure, unwavering in his commitment to protect his people.
Gan Fall's primary motivation is the protection of Skypiea and its inhabitants. He is driven by a sense of responsibility to free his land from Enel's cruel and inhuman rule. A significant personal goal is to see the end of the ancient war with the Shandia, a conflict he believes will conclude when the island's golden bell rings out its beautiful song once more. His role in the story is as a major ally to the Straw Hat Pirates during their adventure in Skypiea. From the moment they arrive, he aids them, saving them from attack and providing them with a whistle to summon him in times of trouble. Throughout the conflict, he fights alongside them against Enel's priests and finally joins the battle against Enel himself.
Gan Fall has several key relationships that define his character. He shares a complicated history with the Shandia. While he sought to compromise with them and had good relations with their chief, the younger warriors like Wyper were hostile, viewing him as an enemy and demanding unreasonable terms for peace. This only changed when they were forced to ally against their common enemy, Enel. His relationship with Enel is one of deep animosity; Enel is the usurper who not only stole his throne but also enslaved and eliminated his Divine Squad, mocked him relentlessly, and ultimately planned to destroy Skypiea. In contrast, he shares a bond of mutual respect and friendship with the pirate king Gol D. Roger, whom he helped during his crew's visit to the sky island. He also forms a strong alliance with the Straw Hat Pirates, becoming a trusted ally who fights alongside them and later draws a parallel between Monkey D. Luffy and Roger.
One of the most notable aspects of Gan Fall’s development is his journey from being the rightful but deposed God, to a wandering mercenary known as the Knight of the Sky, and finally to his return as the twice-serving God of Skypiea after Enel’s defeat. This arc demonstrates his resilience and his unwavering dedication to his homeland. After reclaiming his position, he sets aside his mercenary armor and, following a timeskip, adopts a more casual appearance, including a shirt bearing the kanji for God and tying his long white hair back into a ponytail.
Despite his advanced age, Gan Fall is a formidable fighter. His wisdom and experience compensate for any loss of physical strength, allowing him to hold his own against powerful opponents like the priest Shura. His fighting style is heavily reliant on his unique partner, Pierre, a large, pink bird who ate the Uma Uma no Mi, a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a horse or a winged horse-like Pegasus. Riding Pierre provides Gan Fall with aerial mobility. In combat, he wields a lance with great proficiency and is highly skilled in the use of Dials, a native technology of Skypiea. He notably conceals an Impact Dial inside his left gauntlet, a device that can absorb and release a powerful shockwave, a tool he uses strategically in battle.
