Description
Sawako Yamanaka teaches music at Sakuragaoka High School and later becomes homeroom teacher for Class 3-2 during the senior year of the original Light Music Club members. An alumna of the same school, she once played guitar in the speed metal band Death Devil under the alias "Catherine" as part of the Light Music Club. She actively conceals this past to preserve her gentle, mature professional image.

During her own high school years, Sawako was shy and reserved. She joined the Light Music Club to impress a male classmate who preferred "wilder" girls. After his initial rejection, she adopted punk-inspired makeup and clothing. With friends Norimi Kawaguchi, Della, and Jane, she formed Death Devil, which gained schoolwide popularity. Her second confession to the same classmate failed when he claimed she had "gone too far." Inspired by his career choice, she pursued teaching after graduation.

As an adult, Sawako's mild-mannered school persona contrasts with her true personality. Privately with the Light Music Club, she reveals an irresponsible, lazy, and eccentric side. She obsessively designs elaborate costumes like French maid uniforms, forcing them onto reluctant members such as Mio Akiyama and Azusa Nakano, even extending to school events like "Romeo and Juliet."

Initially reluctant to advise the club, Sawako accepts after Ritsu Tainaka blackmails her with evidence of her Death Devil involvement. She names the band "Ho-kago Tea Time" when members delay choosing. She occasionally fills in on guitar with her Epiphone "1958" Korina Flying V when Yui Hirasawa is absent. As their third-year homeroom teacher, she deliberately groups all senior band members and Nodoka Manabe in one class to minimize new names to remember.

After the original members graduate, Sawako advises the reformed Light Music Club under Azusa Nakano, renaming it "Wakaba Girls" to reflect the novice members. Her past resurfaces unexpectedly—like when her old guitar funds a club pet turtle, or when she briefly reverts to her wilder persona while playing instruments.
