Description
Shigure Sohma bears the Dog spirit's curse from the Chinese zodiac, transforming into a black dog if embraced by someone of the opposite sex or under severe physical stress. Born approximately between February 6, 1970, and January 26, 1971, he stands among the oldest cursed members of his Sohma generation. Confined by the family's restrictive environment during his early years, he cultivated an aloof demeanor and intellectual curiosity, frequently escaping into books. A prophetic childhood dream about the unborn Akito Sohma ignited an immediate, lifelong obsession, forging his complex connection to the family's "God" figure.
His school years solidified the "Mabudachi Trio" friendship with Hatori and Ayame Sohma, a bond enduring into adulthood despite their differing personalities. Shigure displayed early insight into the Sohma family's dysfunction, critically viewing dynamics like Ren Sohma's jealousy toward Akito as "pitiful." Discovering Akito's intimate relationship with Kureno Sohma prompted Shigure's calculated retaliation: sleeping with Akito's mother, Ren. This act of cruelty led to his banishment from the Sohma main estate. He lived alone until Hatsuharu Sohma pleaded with him to shelter the abused Yuki Sohma. Shigure agreed, stipulating Hatsuharu call him "Sensei," and Yuki moved into his home.
Working as a novelist, Shigure publishes literary works under his real name and sensational romance novels as Noa Kiritani. Residing in a remote house, he invites the homeless Tohru Honda to live there as housekeeper. Initially, he perceives Tohru as a pawn to manipulate the curse's dissolution, recognizing her potential to influence Akito and the zodiac members. He presents a superficially carefree and perverted front, often making inappropriate jokes about women, masking a deeply strategic and manipulative core. His driving motivation is shattering the zodiac curse to liberate Akito from her role as "God" and possess her entirely. Orchestrating events like ensuring Tohru's presence, provoking Akito through psychological games, and timing encounters between Tohru and Kureno serve this goal.
Despite his self-serving schemes, Shigure exhibits intermittent compassion. He facilitates reconciliations, such as between Hatori and Mayuko Shiraki, and offers Tohru emotional support, attending her parent-teacher conferences and giving gifts. Younger zodiac members like Rin and Hatsuharu seek his knowledge of family secrets, acknowledging his mentorship. Yet he remains largely unrepentant about Akito's infliction of suffering on others, prioritizing his ultimate objective. He declares himself unwilling to endure hurt and incapable of relinquishing his claims, stating he would "dirty his hands" for his desires. Bitterness fueled by Akito's betrayal with Kureno intensifies his ruthless actions.
Coexisting with Tohru gradually softens Shigure's perspective. He develops genuine affection for her, feeling guilt over exploiting her innocence. This culminates in a pivotal confession where he reveals the harsh truth about the zodiac's scapegoating of Kyo, the Cat, admitting his own role in perpetuating this dynamic. He acknowledges the curse's dehumanizing nature, expressing remorse and calling himself "the dirtiest one of all." After the curse breaks, he abandons his obsession with controlling Akito, allowing her autonomy to choose her path. When she returns, he adopts a supportive role, encouraging her emotional growth and reconciliation with the zodiac members.
In the sequel *Fruits Basket Another*, Shigure marries Akito, and they have a son, Shiki Sohma. As a father, he retains his teasing, lighthearted manner, often embarrassing Shiki, who describes him as a "joke of a grown man." Despite this, Shiki regards him as reliable and deeply involved in his life. Shigure encourages his son to confront past mistakes and fosters his development, reflecting his own evolution from manipulative schemer to committed family figure. His wardrobe shifts from traditional kimonos to modern casual wear, symbolizing his departure from the Sohma family's oppressive traditions.
