Description
Jonathan Joestar is the central protagonist of the first story arc of the manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, titled Phantom Blood. He is the heir to the wealthy and aristocratic Joestar family in late 19th-century England, born on April 4, 1868, as the son of George Joestar I and Mary Joestar. His early childhood was marked by tragedy when his mother died in a carriage accident while protecting the infant Jonathan. Raised at the Joestar estate, he grew up aspiring to be a true gentleman, a goal instilled in him by his father’s emphasis on honor and chivalry.
Jonathan is characterized by his profound kindness, honesty, and unwavering sense of justice. He is a fundamentally virtuous individual, described as a gentleman who treats everyone with respect and feels empathy even for his adversaries. Although he possesses a strong and passionate spirit, his nature is also defined by a degree of naivety and emotional vulnerability, especially in his youth. Jonathan strives to see the good in people, a trait that makes his clashes with pure evil particularly poignant. He has a clear moral code and is driven by a desire to protect his loved ones and uphold his family's legacy.
His primary motivation throughout his story is to stop his adoptive brother, Dio Brando. The narrative begins when a young Dio is taken in by Jonathan's father. Dio resents Jonathan’s privilege and dedicates himself to usurping his position, psychologically tormenting Jonathan, killing his beloved dog, and sabotaging his budding romance with a girl named Erina Pendleton. The conflict escalates fatally when Jonathan discovers Dio is using an ancient Aztec artifact known as the Stone Mask to poison his father. After George Joestar is killed by the newly transformed vampire Dio, Jonathan vows revenge. He seeks out a master of Hamon, also known as the Ripple, and trains rigorously in this martial art that channels the energy of sunlight to destroy vampires and other undead creatures, adopting this as his purpose.
In his role as the first JoJo, Jonathan's story sets the foundation for the entire Joestar lineage. He embarks on a quest against his brother that introduces the core conflict of the series: the superhuman struggle between the Joestar family and the vampiric threat of Dio. His key relationships include his father, George, whose murder hardens his resolve; his mentor, Will A. Zeppeli, who sacrifices his own life to pass his remaining Hamon energy to Jonathan; his loyal friend and ally, Robert E. O. Speedwagon, who is saved by Jonathan and becomes a lifelong supporter of his family; and his beloved wife, Erina Pendleton, whom he marries after defeating Dio.
Throughout his relatively short journey, Jonathan develops from a sheltered, idealistic boy into a formidable and self-sacrificing hero. He learns to channel his righteous anger into focused power, maturing under the tutelage of Zeppeli. His ultimate act of development is a tragic one: after seemingly defeating Dio and marrying Erina, he is killed during their honeymoon voyage when Dio’s severed head ambushes him. In a final act of heroism, a mortally wounded Jonathan ensures Erina and an orphaned baby escape the burning ship, dying to protect his family’s future. His body is later stolen by Dio, who uses it as his own for decades to come, making Jonathan's legacy a permanent, if tragic, part of the ongoing saga.
Jonathan's notable abilities are initially based on his immense natural physical prowess; he is an expert boxer with remarkable strength and endurance. After being trained by Will A. Zeppeli, he masters Hamon, a breathing technique that produces a life-force energy with properties identical to sunlight. This allows him to perform a variety of attacks, including the Spring Punch, which extends the reach of his fist, and various named "Overdrives" that channel Hamon through different mediums such as water, metal, or directly into an opponent. His signature technique is the Sunlight Yellow Overdrive, a devastating barrage of Hamon-charged punches. While he does not possess a Stand like later protagonists, his pure mastery of Hamon represents the series' original power system and is key to his capability as a vampire hunter.
