Description
Nuriko, originally named Ryuuen Chou, is one of Suzaku's seven celestial warriors. Born March 10 and standing 166 cm tall, he possesses purple hair in anime adaptations, with golden eyes in the manga and pink eyes in the anime. His appearance transforms across the series: initially, he presents femininely with waist-length curled hair while impersonating his deceased sister Korin in Emperor Hotohori's harem. Later, he ties his hair into a braid for practicality during travels and finally cuts it short upon embracing his true identity, symbolizing freedom from living solely for Korin's memory.

Nuriko balances theatricality, vanity, and flirtatiousness with profound compassion, loyalty, and courage. He displays jealousy and impulsiveness in competitive settings like the imperial harem but exhibits unwavering level-headedness and selflessness when protecting others. His philosophy—"love conquers all"—views hatred as weakness and fuels his bravery and willingness to sacrifice for friends like Miaka and fellow warriors.

His traumatic backstory reveals a premature birth into Konan's merchant-class Chou family. Frequently ill as a child, his celestial mark faded temporarily. At age nine, he discovered superhuman strength by saving a girl from a carriage accident, confirming his Suzaku destiny. His deep bond with younger sister Korin ended when she died in a street accident while rushing to stop him from meeting a romantic admirer. Devastated, he adopted her identity to enter Hotohori's harem, seeking to honor her spirit.

Nuriko's development centers on reconciling dual identities. Initially navigating life as "Korin" while harboring unrequited feelings for Hotohori, he later recognizes his cross-dressing stemmed from unresolved grief. Discarding feminine attire and cutting his hair, he embraces his warrior role and shifts romantic focus toward Miaka while maintaining platonic loyalty to Hotohori. His relationships showcase protectiveness: he mentors Tamahome as a "big brother," shares teasing camaraderie with Tasuki, and prioritizes Miaka's safety above all else.

As a celestial warrior, Nuriko wields inhuman strength, lifting objects like palace walls or carriages. His combat relies on brute force, later enhanced by Taiitsukun's bracelets that transform into strength-amplifying armbands. He dies protecting Miaka from Seiryuu warriors, affirming his male identity in final moments—though Miaka and others express uncertainty about his gender while emphasizing their enduring love. His death galvanizes the warriors and strengthens Miaka's resolve to summon Suzaku. His legacy persists in subsequent media, including the light novel *Suzaku Hi Den*, where his influence on the warriors' camaraderie remains evident.
