OVA
Description
Barón Ashura began as two separate Mycenae Empire priests, Tristan and Isolde, who spearheaded a failed plot to assassinate the god Zeus. Their punishment was millennia of stasis on Bardos Island. Dr. Hell's team eventually unearthed their preserved bodies, but a collapsing rock shattered Tristan's right side and Isolde's left. Dr. Hell merged their intact halves using a mysterious formula, forging the composite being Barón Ashura. Upon awakening, the enraged entity assaulted the excavators, only to be subdued by surgical brainwashing that enforced absolute loyalty to Dr. Hell and blocked aggression against him or his allies.

Physically, the character presents a stark duality: the male Tristan half possesses darker skin, a black eye, and a thicker eyebrow, while the female Isolde half exhibits lighter skin, visible makeup, and long red hair when hoodless. A robe with distinct purple and black sections typically covers each respective half. This division extends to their voice, with the male and female sides capable of speaking individually or together.

Serving as Dr. Hell's chief lieutenant, Barón Ashura commanded the Ashura Corps and countless Mechanical Beasts. The character wielded formidable superhuman abilities, including running across water, immense strength sufficient to topple giant robots, and mastery of tactics like infiltration, disguise, and hostage-taking. A critical vulnerability lay in the brainwashing implant, which inflicted crippling pain or paralysis to physically prevent disobedience or attacks against Dr. Hell's faction.

Personality-wise, Barón Ashura displayed fierce loyalty to Dr. Hell and the Mycenae Empire, frequently employing cruel and deceitful strategies against enemies. The character harbored sensitivity regarding its fused form, especially when its origin was referenced. Key relationships included a rivalry with Count Brocken, mutual respect for Viscount Pygman, and deep-seated animosity toward the Kabuto family—particularly Koji Kabuto, pilot of Mazinger Z, whom the character linked to the ancient enemy Zeus. This connection fueled relentless assaults on Mazinger Z, driven by potent fear and hatred.

Within the *Mazinkaiser* OVA continuity, Barón Ashura remained Dr. Hell's most trusted subordinate, orchestrating attacks on the Photon Power Laboratory. Notable actions involved capturing and reprogramming Mazinger Z into "Ashura Mazinger," deploying the assassin androids Gamia Q (whom the character regarded as daughters), and repeatedly kidnapping Sayaka Yumi to manipulate Koji Kabuto. Following successive defeats, Dr. Hell imprisoned the character. After escaping, Barón Ashura volunteered to become the control unit for the ultimate Mechanical Beast, Hell King Gordon, physically integrating into the machine alongside Iron Masks. Hell King Gordon initially overwhelmed Mazinkaiser in the final battle but was ultimately destroyed by Mazinkaiser's Kaiser Blade; Barón Ashura perished in the explosion, apologizing for this ultimate failure.

A pivotal development occurred when the character uncovered Dr. Hell's true objective: usurping Mycenaean technology, not restoring the empire. This revelation sparked a thwarted rebellion attempt, physically blocked by the brainwashing. Barón Ashura then formed a brief, uneasy alliance with Koji Kabuto to halt Dr. Hell. After Dr. Hell's demise, the brainwashing restrictions dissolved, enabling a ritualistic self-sacrifice: the character tore apart its fused body to awaken the dormant Mycenae Empire, affirming its ultimate loyalty lay with the ancient civilization, not Dr. Hell.
