Description
Ryūnosuke Umemiya, nicknamed “Wooden Sword” Ryu, transitions from delinquent gang leader to dedicated shaman, driven by his quest for a “Best Place”—a concept anchoring his identity. Born December 24, 1980, his towering physique, 1970s-inspired white suits with oversized collars and purple accents, and an animated foot-long pompadour shifting with his emotions create an unmistakable silhouette. In battle, he wears an Asakura-crafted black vest exposing his midriff and purple-detailed pants, amplifying his shamanic aura.

Initially clashing with Yoh Asakura and Manta Oyamada, Ryu’s path alters when possessed by Tokageroh, a vengeful spirit whose failed revenge against Amidamaru binds them as allies. Under Yohmei Asakura’s tutelage in Izumo, he hones shamanic techniques like Hyōi-Gattai (spirit fusion) and Over Soul, channeling spirits into combat mediums. His bokutō, Ame no Murakumo—carved from sacred wood—evolves into forms mirroring his growth: the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi Go and the armor-type Sashimi Bocho Susanoro, blending swordsmanship with sushi craftsmanship.

With Furyoku peaking at 85,500, Ryu competes in the Shaman Fight with Team Funbari Onsen, merging street brawling with spiritual prowess. Prehensile serpentine tendrils and energy slashes define his style, including techniques like Hell Dragon Scarlet Lizard and Ultra Sabaki, the latter inspired by his culinary precision.

Loyalty defines him: he shields Yoh from lethal blows and mends bonds with his former gang, redefining the “Best Place” as Yoh’s envisioned shamanic utopia. Post-tournament, he embraces responsibility as head chef of Funbari Onsen, symbolizing his shift from aimless rebel to grounded leader.

In *Shaman King: Flowers*, a 33-year-old Ryu mentors new shamans while managing the onsen, his enduring friendships with Lyserg Diethel and Jun Tao punctuated by comedic romantic missteps ending in rejection. His arc weaves redemption, camaraderie, and self-discovery into the saga’s exploration of shamanic conflict, cementing him as a bridge between generations in a world balancing tradition and evolution.
