Description
Kôichi Uehara, a fourth-grade student in Tokyo's suburbs, initially displays unlikable traits, joining classmates in bullying quiet classmate Sayoko Kikuchi—targeted as "ugly"—reflecting his early susceptibility to social pressures.

Discovering a stone-like fossil in a muddy ditch on his walk home, Kôichi brings it home. Washing it inadvertently revives Coo, a kappa (mythical Japanese water spirit) fossilized for roughly 200 years. Kôichi's family accepts Coo: his father Yasuo readily welcomes the creature, while younger sister Hitomi's initial disdain gradually softens. The family dog, Ossan—a rescue previously abused—also joins their dynamic, communicating telepathically with Coo.

Kôichi's bond with Coo sparks significant personal growth. His aloofness towards Sayoko shifts as he recognizes their shared introversion and sensitivity. Influenced by Coo's perspective, Kôichi eventually defends Sayoko against bullies, applying Coo's sumo lesson that "strength alone isn't good" to non-violently confront the ringleader, demonstrating his developing empathy and moral courage.

Seeking Coo's origins, Kôichi journeys with him to Tono, a rural Japanese region rich in folklore. Staying at a traditional inn, Coo encounters a zashiki-warashi (house spirit) who reveals she hasn't seen another kappa in over a century. This trip deepens Kôichi's understanding of Coo's isolation and mythical creatures' decline.

Media exposure forces Coo into the public eye, subjecting Kôichi's family to intense scrutiny. During a televised interview, a cryptid expert displays a mummified kappa arm—identified as Coo's father's severed limb—triggering Coo's traumatic memories and a destructive psychic outburst. Kôichi witnesses the chaos, including Coo's escape atop Ossan and the dog's subsequent death in a car accident.

After these events, Kôichi assists Coo's departure to Okinawa following a letter from a kijimuna (forest spirit). He ensures Coo meets Sayoko one last time before her move due to her parents' divorce; they promise to correspond. Kôichi then undertakes a demanding journey to ship Coo to his new guardian, accepting the separation while holding hope for a future reunion.
