Usagi Tsukino is a fourteen-year-old Japanese schoolgirl residing in Tokyo's Azabu-Jūban district with her parents, Kenji and Ikuko, and her younger brother, Shingo. Her name, Usagi, means "rabbit," while Tsukino incorporates the kanji for "moon," forming the pun "Rabbit of the Moon"—a nod to an Asian folktale. This symbolism extends to her appearance: blue eyes, long blonde hair often tied in twin odango buns, and a slightly short, somewhat chubby stature. She typically wears her blue sailor-collar middle school uniform with a pink bow, which later changes to a dark blue and red high school uniform.
After meeting Luna, a black cat marked with a crescent moon, Usagi discovers her destiny as Sailor Moon, Guardian of Love and Justice. Luna gives her a magical brooch that facilitates her transformation. Initially a reluctant heroine, Usagi is carefree, clumsy, and an underachiever who dislikes studying and is quick to cry. Her hobbies include eating, sleeping, reading manga, playing video games, and shopping. Yet she possesses profound kindness, compassion, and an unwavering belief in the good in others, making her reluctant to harm opponents, preferring to heal and redeem them.
As Sailor Moon, her appearance shifts to a uniform comprising a blue skirt, white leotard with chest armor, a blue sailor collar with white stripes, a pink bow holding her brooch, a pink choker with a crescent moon, and knee-high pink boots. She wields the Moon Tiara as her primary weapon. Her power evolves through multiple forms, each with distinct uniforms: Super Sailor Moon dons a white skirt with a gradient hem and wing-like shoulder pads, while Eternal Sailor Moon features angel wings, a three-layered skirt in yellow, pink, and blue, and a golden crescent moon mark on her forehead. In her past life, she was Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom, wearing a long white gown. Her future self becomes Neo-Queen Serenity, ruler of 30th-century Crystal Tokyo.
She is the reincarnation of Princess Serenity and bearer of the immensely powerful Silver Crystal. Her destiny is intertwined with Mamoru Chiba, the reincarnation of her past lover, Prince Endymion, who operates as Tuxedo Mask. After a confrontational start, they recall their past lives and form a deep romantic bond. Their future daughter, Chibiusa, travels from the 30th century, initially engaging in a sibling-like rivalry with Usagi before their relationship deepens. An alternate universe side story features a second daughter, Kousagi Tsukino.
Usagi matures from a naive, reluctant girl into a confident leader and capable young woman. Though she retains her cheerful and sometimes silly demeanor, she grows more proactive and strategic in battle, relying less on guidance from Luna and her fellow Sailor Guardians. She forms the core of a team that includes Sailors Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Saturn, and eventually Sailor Chibi Moon. Her leadership stems not from intellect or physical strength but from empathy, love, and unwavering hope, which often prove key to victory. Her belief in redemption allows her to save enemies rather than destroy them.
Her powers, derived from the Silver Crystal, expand throughout the series. Initial attacks include Moon Tiara Action and Moon Healing Escalation. As she transforms, she gains new compacts and wands like the Cosmic Heart Compact and Crisis Moon Compact, enabling stronger attacks such as Moon Princess Halation. In her Eternal Sailor Moon form, she wields the Eternal Moon Article. The Silver Crystal's power can affect the entire solar system and ultimately grants her eternal youth, halting her physical aging.
