Description
Méphisto Phélès is a demon and exorcist serving as the Japanese branch chief of the True Cross Knights, chairman of True Cross Academy, and director of the exorcist training school. He initially introduces himself as a friend of the late Shiro Fujimoto and is the one who steers Rin Okumura onto the path of becoming an exorcist after Fujimoto's death. His true identity is Samael, the King of Time and one of the Eight Demon Kings, the second son of Satan, and the second most powerful entity in Gehenna, the demon realm. He is therefore a half-brother to Rin and Yukio Okumura, as well as to the other demon kings such as Amaimon, the King of Earth.
Méphisto possesses a flamboyant, eccentric, and highly unpredictable personality. He habitually adopts a playful and frivolous demeanor, often making jokes and treating serious situations with levity, which can make it difficult for others to discern his true intentions. However, this outward cheerfulness masks a deeply calculating, strategic, and exceedingly intelligent nature. He is a master manipulator who thinks many steps ahead, orchestrating events from behind the scenes like a chess player. He exhibits a strong fondness for Japanese subculture, including manga, anime, video games, and music, and frequently indulges his own amusement.
Méphisto's primary motivation is to prevent the destruction of the material world by his older brother, Lucifer, the King of Light. He has been repeatedly using time loops, cycling through different timelines in an attempt to find a way to defeat Lucifer. He has also made a secret pact with his father, Satan, in which he agreed to provide suitable vessels for demonic incarnation in exchange for Satan refraining from directly killing humans. Because of this pact, he cannot openly betray Satan, which forces him to work through subtle manipulation, using human agents and orchestrating apparent coincidences to achieve his goals. His ultimate aim is to maintain the balance between the human and demon worlds.
In Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night Saga, Méphisto's role is that of a guide and facilitator for Rin's journey into the past. He provides Rin with a key that allows him to travel forty years into the past, acting as a time-traveling guide so that Rin can uncover the truth about his mother, Yuri Frederick Egin, and the events of the Blue Night. In this arc, his long-term plotting and his mastery of time are directly relevant to the narrative.
Key relationships for Méphisto include his half-brothers within the demon royal family. He has a notable relationship with Amaimon, who calls him brother and acknowledges his authority, and with Rin and Yukio Okumura, who are his younger half-brothers through their shared father, Satan. Toward Rin, he acts as a mentor of sorts, but his motives are ambiguous, and he treats Rin as a crucial piece in his larger game rather than as a true sibling. He is also tied to Shiro Fujimoto, having orchestrated parts of his life for his own plans.
Méphisto's development is gradual and largely centered on the revelation of his true allegiances. While he appears as an ambiguous and possibly antagonistic figure early in the series, his role as a secret ally to humanity, operating under severe constraints imposed by his pact with Satan, becomes clearer over time. The Blue Night Saga further underscores his complex nature as a demon whose interests and strategic necessities align with the survival of the human world.
His notable abilities stem from his title as King of Time. He has absolute control over time and space, allowing him to teleport, stop time, and even travel through time. He can create illusions, summon high-class demons, and has immense combat prowess, holding the prestigious rank of Honorary Knight within the exorcist order, a rank second only to Paladin. He also has a peculiar and seemingly whimsical ability to transform himself into a small dog by counting to three in German.
