Description
Mephisto Pheles, the ancient demon Samael, reigns as one of the Eight Demon Kings and sovereign of Time. A high-ranking member of Gehenna’s Baal Demon Royal Family, he stands second only to Satan in power. For two centuries, he has infiltrated the human world under guises like Johann Faust V, Loki, and Trickster, masquerading as principal of True Cross Academy and head of the Exorcist Cram School. Though the True Cross Order’s leadership covertly acknowledges his demonic nature, he maintains his facade as a mentor to exorcists while covertly advancing his own schemes.
Once aligned with Gehenna, Mephisto pivoted to safeguarding Assiah after opposing Satan’s annihilation plans. He founded the True Cross Order and brokered alliances with the Vatican, yet his ethically murky pursuits—such as cloning experiments linked to the catastrophic Blue Night—reveal a willingness to risk humanity for strategic gains. Following the death of his longtime ally Shiro Fujimoto, he assumed guardianship of Shiro’s adoptive sons, Rin and Yukio Okumura. He enrolled Rin at the academy under strict surveillance, balancing mentorship with calculated manipulation to forge him into a countermeasure against Satan.
His dominion over time and space grants abilities like temporal stasis, dimensional traversal, and reality-altering barriers, which he wields to imprison threats like his brother Amaimon within enchanted artifacts. Shapeshifting into animals—a white dog or insect—allows covert observation, though excessive use of his temporal magic erodes his physical form until he regenerates. Vulnerabilities include allergies to fungal entities such as the Impure King, complicating confrontations.
Eccentric and chaos-driven, Mephisto treats conflicts as theatrical games, cloaking shrewd strategies beneath otaku-inspired antics and pop culture obsessions. He provokes allies through intrusions or withheld intel, yet his actions consistently align with preserving Assiah. During the Kyoto crisis, he defied Vatican execution orders to enable Rin’s rescue, and in the Shimane Illuminati Saga, he unveiled his Samael identity while struggling to sustain crumbling dimensional barriers.
His history intertwines with pivotal events: the Blue Night’s cloning experiments inadvertently enabled Satan’s assaults on Assiah, exposing the perilous duality of his methods. Later efforts to stabilize Gehenna’s barriers and mediate human-demon conflicts cement his role as both a destabilizing trickster and an indispensable arbiter of balance. Though his guidance of Rin evolves into reluctant guardianship, his motives remain veiled, intertwining Rin’s growth with schemes to thwart Satan’s resurgence and outmaneuver rivals like Lucifer.
