Description
Vermouth, operating under aliases Chris Vineyard and Sharon Vineyard, is a high-ranking Black Organization member with a complex history of multiple identities. She achieved fame as the Oscar-winning actress Sharon Vineyard on Broadway and in film while simultaneously active in the criminal underworld. Roughly twenty years ago, she killed FBI agent Jodie Starling's father after he investigated her. She then staged Sharon Vineyard's death and publicly assumed the identity of Sharon's previously unknown daughter, Chris Vineyard, masking her true nature.
Holding a unique position as the boss's favorite, Vermouth enjoys significant independence within the organization. Bourbon blackmails her using knowledge of a personal secret connected to the boss. Her motivations frequently diverge from the organization's goals, leading her to pursue personal agendas. She exhibits no visible aging over two decades; it remains unclear if this is halted aging or de-aging. This phenomenon, confirmed when Shuichi Akai's shotgun blast grazed her face without revealing a disguise, parallels the effects of the APTX 4869 drug researched by Shiho Miyano's family – research Vermouth labels "foolish."
Her personality blends ruthlessness with unexpected protectiveness. She blackmails individuals into crime and taunts enemies, yet repeatedly risks her life for Conan Edogawa (her "Cool Guy" or "Silver Bullet"), Ran Mouri ("Angel"), and Kogoro Mouri. This duality stems from Shinichi Kudo and Ran saving her life in New York, reigniting a latent sense of faith she had dismissed as an atheist. She shows reluctance to harm children, exemplified by setting fire to a house containing the young Jodie Starling instead of killing her directly.
Vermouth possesses exceptional skills, especially in disguise and reconnaissance. Her near-perfect mimicry of appearances and voices, rivaling Kaito Kid, was honed under magician Toichi Kuroba. She infiltrates high-security locations like Tokyo Metropolitan Police headquarters to steal files and conducts surveillance, such as uncovering FBI operatives monitoring Kogoro Mouri. She also demonstrates high pain tolerance and resilience, evidenced by shooting herself in the leg to resist sleeping gas and escaping with severe injuries including broken ribs and a gunshot wound.
In *Zero's Tea Time*, Vermouth interacts with Tōru Amuro (Bourbon), maintaining their complex dynamic. Their dinners and conversations underscore the underlying tension of mutual blackmail: his knowledge of her secret connection to the boss and her awareness of his true loyalties, highlighting her role as an informant and manipulator within the organization.
Vermouth deliberately conceals from the Black Organization her knowledge of Conan's true identity as Shinichi Kudo and Shiho Miyano's transformation into Ai Haibara. She refers to Conan as the "Silver Bullet," suggesting his significance to her personal objectives. Her protection of Conan and Ran includes sabotaging organization operations targeting them, driven by personal loyalty rooted in Yukiko Kudo's past friendship with Sharon Vineyard and the New York rescue.
