Description
Mitsuki Hayase is a talented high school swimmer, admired by peers like Akane Suzumiya. She facilitates a relationship between her shy best friend Haruka Suzumiya and Takayuki Narumi, hiding her own feelings for Takayuki. A pivotal moment occurs when Mitsuki detains Takayuki en route to meet Haruka, requesting a birthday ring. This indirectly contributes to Haruka being struck by a vehicle and entering a coma.

Following the accident, Mitsuki abandons swimming to care for the severely depressed and guilt-ridden Takayuki. She supports his daily needs and regularly visits the comatose Haruka for a year. Her suppressed feelings culminate in a physical encounter with Takayuki, initiating a three-year romantic relationship. During this time, Takayuki stabilizes emotionally and professionally. Their plans to live together and intimacy are discovered by Akane, who reacts with intense resentment towards Mitsuki, perceiving betrayal.

Haruka's awakening creates turmoil for Mitsuki. She grows insecure and jealous of Takayuki's hospital visits, confronting him and demanding he stop seeing Haruka. After an emotional breakdown post-work, she has a sexual encounter with Takayuki's friend, Shinji Taira. This incident, coupled with recognizing Takayuki's lingering feelings for Haruka, prompts Mitsuki to end their relationship, remove the symbolic ring, and quit her job. She later confesses the full history of her relationship with Takayuki to Haruka, resulting in Haruka slapping her. Mitsuki then distances herself from both.

In the resolution, Mitsuki reconciles with Takayuki after he actively chooses her and affirms his love is no longer tied to Haruka. She witnesses Akane's swimming success in the series' conclusion, implying potential closure. In the alternate timeline OVA *Kimi ga Nozomu Eien: Next Season*, following Haruka's narrative route, Mitsuki plays a minor role, primarily referenced regarding her relinquished swimming career and without romantic involvement with Takayuki.

Within the comedic spin-off *Ayumayu Theater*, Mitsuki appears intermittently in super-deformed ("chibi") segments alongside other main characters. These brief appearances are comedic skits unrelated to her core narrative or development in the primary series.
