Description
Cho Hakkai, originally Cho Gonou, was born with his twin sister Kanan. His parents' divorce led to childhood abandonment and life in an orphanage, fostering deep distrust. At sixteen, he reunited with Kanan at boarding college; their relationship deepened into a forbidden romance. While Hakkai tutored, Kanan was abducted by the youkai lord Hyakugan Maoh. Consumed by rage, Hakkai slaughtered youkai to reach her, only to witness her suicide. This trauma triggered his transformation into a youkai, leaving him near death with severe abdominal wounds and the loss of his right eye.

Sha Gojyo discovered and cared for him despite initial hostility. After recovery, Hakkai was pursued by the priest Genjo Sanzo and Son Goku for his crimes. Following capture and trial, he was renamed "Hakkai" – referencing a cardinal sin – and placed under Sanzo's supervision. He joined Sanzo, Goku, and Gojyo on their westward journey, assuming responsibility for daily needs: cooking, cleaning, and medical care.

Hakkai presents as mild-mannered, polite, and perpetually cheerful, with a soft-spoken demeanor and frequent smiles. He enjoys domestic tasks like gardening and housekeeping, often adopting a nurturing role. His intelligence and teaching background contribute to extensive knowledge and a strong memory; sharp observational skills aid in reading people and gambling. His humor features ambiguous, cheerfully delivered barbs, unsettling due to his rare anger. Beneath this affable exterior lie profound guilt, self-loathing, and melancholy stemming from his past. Suppressed rage surfaces in extreme situations as brutal vengeance.

Physically, Hakkai stands approximately 181 cm (5'11") with dark brown hair and green eyes. His right eye is a magitech prosthetic with limited vision, requiring glasses. A large abdominal scar remains from his injuries. He typically wears loose, practical clothing, including a white shoulder cloth for his pet dragon Hakuryuu to perch without damaging fabric. Three silver cuffs on his left ear act as power limiters; their removal triggers a demonic transformation: hair elongates, nails sharpen into claws, and vine-like markings cover his skin. His left eye turns yellow with a slitted pupil while the prosthetic remains unchanged. This form amplifies physical abilities and chi manipulation but risks mental instability from environmental energy corruption.

His primary ability is qigong (chi manipulation), enabling energy blasts, protective barriers, and wound healing – though he cannot regenerate lost blood. He demonstrates proficiency in martial arts. Unrestrained, his chi powers intensify; his vine markings extend as physical bindings to ensnare targets and can channel energy, such as electricity. Prolonged use risks permanent insanity. Hakkai removed his limiters only three times: rescuing Gojyo from youkai, confronting Goku inside a magical gourd, and subduing Goku's berserk Seiten Taisei form. During the last, he nearly lost control and attacked Gojyo.

Hakkai maintains complex relationships. He lives with Gojyo; the initial rescue forged mutual reliance, though they often bicker. He mediates conflicts between Gojyo and Goku while respecting Sanzo's authority, using his calm to communicate with the volatile priest. He is fiercely protective, willingly endangering himself to shield the group. His pet dragon Hakuryuu often transforms into a Jeep he drives aggressively during missions.

Throughout the journey, Hakkai struggles to reconcile his violent past with his current identity. He avoids discussing Kanan but does not regret their relationship, viewing societal taboos as irrelevant. His guilt manifests as self-sacrificial tendencies, including willingness to use a forbidden self-destruct technique annihilating himself and surrounding threats. Despite his burdens, he remains committed to his companions' safety and the journey's purpose.
