Description
Cherry, whose real name Sakuranbo means "deranged monk," prefers his nickname associating the monastic life with being "sweet outside and all core inside." A Buddhist monk residing in Tomobiki, he first appears predicting Ataru Moroboshi's extraordinary bad luck. He frequently emerges unexpectedly, causing others to recoil due to his abrupt appearances and distinctive visage. Though a wandering monk, he semi-permanently settles in Tomobiki, living in a tent in a vacant lot.
Cherry wields significant spiritual abilities to detect and exorcise evil spirits, though Ataru's pervasive misfortune often disrupts his exorcisms, causing unintended consequences. His defining gluttony leads him to intrude on meals at the Moroboshi household or other gatherings to consume food without offering help. He sometimes performs exorcisms in exchange for meals, though his services are rarely effective or wanted. His niece is Sakura, a Shinto priestess and school nurse at Tomobiki High School, who shares his enormous appetite. Despite their familial bond, they fiercely compete over food, once bankrupting a restaurant in a contest.
