Description
Cherry, whose real name Sakuranbo means "deranged monk," prefers his nickname associating the monastic life with being "sweet outside and all core inside." A Buddhist monk residing in Tomobiki, he first appears predicting Ataru Moroboshi's extraordinary bad luck. He frequently emerges unexpectedly, causing others to recoil due to his abrupt appearances and distinctive visage. Though a wandering monk, he semi-permanently settles in Tomobiki, living in a tent in a vacant lot.

Cherry wields significant spiritual abilities to detect and exorcise evil spirits, though Ataru's pervasive misfortune often disrupts his exorcisms, causing unintended consequences. His defining gluttony leads him to intrude on meals at the Moroboshi household or other gatherings to consume food without offering help. He sometimes performs exorcisms in exchange for meals, though his services are rarely effective or wanted. His niece is Sakura, a Shinto priestess and school nurse at Tomobiki High School, who shares his enormous appetite. Despite their familial bond, they fiercely compete over food, once bankrupting a restaurant in a contest. Cherry's unnamed twin sister—Sakura's mother—is also a Shinto priestess and shares his facial features.

Appearing in numerous manga chapters, Cherry often exacerbates trouble for Ataru and others. His sudden interventions typically escalate chaotic situations; he occasionally ensures his ominous predictions come true. Early manga chapters depict him more aggressively, including multiple attempts to murder Ataru and an attack on Oyuki with a shovel. His abilities include explosive appearances and utilizing his "ugly visage" defensively.

Cherry maintains strained relationships, particularly targeting Ataru for the negative spiritual energy he attracts. He refers to others formally, like "Moroboshi Ataru" and "Lum," while Sakura addresses him as "Oji-ue." His catchphrases are the Buddhist invocation "Namandabu" and dire warnings like "Y... your face, my friend... it's profoundly unfortunate!" His character design evolved slightly between early and later manga chapters and anime adaptations, initially featuring a taller stature and visible neck.

He remains a constant presence in the manga, appearing in nearly every chapter, with his explosive entrances a signature trait in anime adaptations. Cherry undergoes no significant long-term character development; his traits—gluttony, spiritual interventions, and antagonistic role—persist consistently across all official media, including OVAs and films.
