TV-Series
Description
Lum, a female Oni alien from Oniboshi, sports cyan or green hair, golden-brown or blue eyes, pointed ears, and small yellow horns. Her typical outfit is a yellow tiger-striped bikini with matching boots, switching to a navy blue sailor uniform at Japan’s Tomobiki High School.

Daughter of Oni leader Invader, she grew up on Oniboshi causing mischief with friends Benten, Oyuki, and Ran. Engaged briefly to the superficial Rei, she rejected him. At 17, she represented the Oni in a tag game against Earthling Ataru Moroboshi to decide Earth’s fate. When Ataru won by removing her bikini top and grabbing her horns—exploiting her modesty—he declared, "Now I can get married!" intending it for his girlfriend Shinobu. Lum misinterpreted this as a proposal, accepting due to her planet’s sacred engagement customs. She moved into Ataru’s home as his self-proclaimed wife despite his reluctance.

Lum naturally flies at varying heights and generates electrical discharges, often unleashing lightning-strength shocks when emotional. These abilities link to her horns; their removal or suppression (e.g., via enchanted ribbons) nullifies her powers until regrowth. A genius inventor, she creates devices like a lipstick forcing wearers to kiss, though her naivety about human customs triggers chaos. She wields advanced alien tech stored in her bikini top, but misuse amplifies disorder. Weaknesses include emotional volatility—especially jealousy over Ataru’s interactions—carelessness, stubbornness, cultural misunderstandings, distaste for garlic, intoxication from umeboshi, and cooking overly spicy human-inedible food.

Lum exhibits fierce loyalty, boundless energy, and devotion to Ataru, exclusively calling him "Darling." She electrocutes him for perceived infidelity yet forgives swiftly, balancing confidence with childlike naivety about Earth’s social norms. Initially antagonistic—scheming against Shinobu—her demeanor softened into patience and calm. She strives for independence while performing traditional roles like housework for the welcoming Moroboshi family.

Her relationships shape her journey:
- With Ataru, one-sided obsession evolves into mutual unspoken affection. Though he initially resists, he defends her in crises. She persistently seeks validation via gadgets, though physical intimacy stays limited. By the series’ end, subtle gestures like arm-holding replace aggression.
- She clashes with Shinobu as a rival but gains mutual respect after Shinobu pursues Mendō.
- Wealthy Mendō relentlessly courts her, yet she rejects him, valuing friendship while staying committed to Ataru. She largely ignores her "Stormtrooper" admirers.
- Her doting parents face boundaries when interfering, like rejecting arranged suitors. Her troublemaking cousin Ten complicates life in her shared home with Ataru.

Across media, Lum transitions from chaotic aggressor to a nuanced figure blending extraterrestrial quirks with vulnerability. Early narratives show her scheming to isolate Ataru, while later ones highlight enduring loyalty—staying despite his flaws. Films and OVAs delve into deeper emotions, like Ataru’s protective instincts affirming her belief in his love. The final anime episode culminates in a deliberate kiss, symbolizing growth.
