Shuna began as the daughter of the Ogre Village chieftain and younger sister of Benimaru. Her village faced destruction by the Orc Lord after rejecting Geldmud's naming offer. Her father sacrificed himself to secure her escape with Benimaru, Hakurou, Souei, and Shion. This group initially mistook Rimuru Tempest for their enemy, Footman. Shuna, however, discerned Rimuru's non-hostile intent when he demonstrated power without harming them. Following this encounter, she relocated with the group to the Goblin Village under Rimuru's protection. Rimuru named her "Shuna," triggering her evolution from Ogre to Kijin and cementing her unwavering loyalty to him.
As an Ogre, Shuna possessed a petite stature resembling a human girl aged 13-14, featuring pink-tinted skin, deep crimson eyes, prominent porcelain horns, and tear-like facial markings. She wore a simple pink kimono covered by a white robe. Her evolution into a Kijin refined her appearance, eliminating the pink skin tint, facial markings, and visible fangs, resulting in a more human-like form standing 145-155 cm tall. She crafted and wore a distinctive white kimono with red embroidery and a red skirt secured by a ribbon, inviting frequent comparisons to a miko (shrine maiden). This appearance remained consistent upon her subsequent evolution into an Oni.
Shuna exhibits a gentle, graceful, and forgiving personality, shaped by her upbringing as an Ogre princess. She possesses keen senses and excels in diplomatic engagements for the Jura-Tempest Federation. While deeply compassionate and empathetic—demonstrated when comforting Rimuru after Falmuth's attack—she harbors a quietly competitive streak, particularly concerning her roles serving Rimuru. This competitiveness occasionally sparks conflicts with Shion over responsibilities like cooking or personal care of Rimuru. She deeply values diligence and experiential learning, feeling betrayed when others achieve results through unique skills rather than effort. Shuna derives significant fulfillment from responsibility and being relied upon, remaining steadfastly loyal to Rimuru and his vision of human-monster coexistence.
Within Tempest's government, Shuna serves as Rimuru's chief economic advisor alongside Rigurd, overseeing the nation's financial stability and development. She also functions as a de facto executive secretary despite lacking the formal title. Her practical contributions extend beyond administration: she manages Rimuru's daily needs, excels in domestic arts like weaving, cooking, and cleaning, and personally designs and produces clothing for Tempest's citizens. Her combat abilities and strategic support prove valuable during critical conflicts. She reinforced barriers with Mjurran to contain Falmuth's invasion forces, aided in redeeming the fallen paladin Adalman, and participated in neutralizing threats like Charybdis and the Orc Lord. In the Trinity spin-off, she supervises Nemu as restitution for a broken item.
Her cultural status in Tempest is notable, as she is consistently ranked among the nation's top three idols alongside Rimuru and Shion. She cultivates personal relationships, including a close bond with her brother Benimaru, whom she occasionally chastises protectively. Subtle narrative cues suggest she harbors deeper feelings for Rimuru.
