Description
Aqua, the water goddess tasked with guiding deceased Japanese youths to the afterlife, neglects her duties by delegating work to Eris while pursuing leisure. This negligence results in her forced accompaniment of Kazuma Satou to a fantasy world after he spitefully chooses her as his divine "cheat" item upon death. Stripped of divine authority, she remains bound to the mortal plane until the Devil King's defeat.
She exhibits supernatural beauty surpassing human idols, with translucent blue eyes and waist-length blue hair secured by a water molecule-shaped clip. Her attire includes a dark blue vest, detached white sleeves, thigh-high boots with heels, and an extremely short skirt with a translucent purple underskirt worn without underwear. A translucent pink hagoromo materializes as her divine relic. She stands 157-158 cm tall, with measurements of 83-56-83 cm.
Aqua displays narcissism, emotional volatility, and functional incompetence. She demands worship for her divinity, aggressively seeks praise, and squanders money on alcohol. Permanently capped intelligence and luck stats cause poor decisions and catastrophic outcomes. Childlike traits include crying when distressed, throwing tantrums, and gullibility. She fiercely protects Axis Cult followers and allies, demonstrating selfless loyalty. While despising demons and undead—routinely attempting to exorcise allies like Wiz and Vanir—she gradually develops reluctant tolerance.
As water goddess and archpriest, her holy magic annihilates undead and demons via Turn Undead, Exorcism, and Sacred Create Water—a deluge capable of flooding cities. She resurrects the recently deceased, dispels curses, purifies liquids into holy water on contact, and manipulates water remotely. These powers prove ineffective against non-evil entities. She squanders skill points on Party Tricks like Nature's Beauty (summoning decorative water fans and flowers) rather than practical abilities. Though physically stronger than average adventurers, she rarely leverages this strategically.
Her relationships define key dynamics: with Kazuma, she shares a contentious yet inseparable bond, insulting him as a "NEET" while relying on his resourcefulness, evolving into grudging camaraderie. She views party members Megumin and Darkness with casual superiority but cooperates in crises. Rivalry with the Eris faith fuels sectarian strife, though she privately respects Eris. Initial hostility toward the lich Wiz shifts to acknowledging her benevolence. She nurtures maternal affection for non-combatants like Emperor Zel, a chick she mistakes for a dragon.
Character development emerges through experiences: early failures include botching menial jobs, worsening debts via destructive magic, and requiring rescue from monsters like Giant Toads. Critical moments reveal depth—resurrecting Kazuma after decapitation, defending Axis cultists from persecution, and expressing remorse for endangering allies. Her loyalty solidifies when rejecting luxurious offers from Mitsurugi to stay with Kazuma's party. By the Crimson Legend arc, she coordinates tactically against the Devil King's general Sylvia despite persistent comedic flaws.
Centuries prior (subjectively shorter for her), Aqua began sending reincarnated Japanese to counter the Devil King, linking her to figures like Kyouya Mitsurugi—whom she later forgets—and a scientist who became the Devil King's subordinate. Her pre-reincarnation choices inadvertently fueled the world's conflicts.
